    Advice to Management

I really think the teaching methods should be updated. I worked in two different centers with vastly different approaches, but neither one went outside the box enough to allow tutors (skilled, creative teachers) to actually teach beyond rote memorization. We should be going beyond looking at test scores and actually helping kids want to learn and succeed. The curriculum, if you want to call it that, is from the... 90's. Update some of us so it is interesting to these kids who have the internet at home and can find more interesting articles in a Google search. Teachers should have more of an opportunity to interact with each other positively to promote engagement. Socializing shouldn't be so stifled.

I worked at Huntington Learning Centers for more than 3 years

    Pros

Flexible schedule. Working one on one with students.

    Cons

Substandard pay. Too much administrative turnover. More focused on selling packages than actually rendering services.

    Advice to Management

Improve commitment to students. Better pay. Improve commitment to tutors/teachers.

I worked at Huntington Learning Centers part-time for less than a year

    Pros

Flexible scheduling, they do allow you to say exactly when you are available to work and won't schedule you when you don't want to work.

    Cons

They require that you show up early to prep for sessions but DO NOT pay you for this time. If you stay after to finish up paperwork, again you are NOT paid for this time. They require that you take the ACT to become a tutor, the time for this is not paid. The training is not paid (6+ hours). Very stringent procedures must be followed during tutoring that don't really allow for appropriate learning or... individualization of services. Hours may be canceled at the last minute. Sometimes you are scheduled for blocks of time with 1-2 hours in between. You have to either leave and come back or stay around for this time, but of course, it is not paid.

I worked at Huntington Learning Centers part-time

    Pros

Teaching is rewarding and generally enjoyable Opportunity to grow as an instructor with frequent feedback from supervisors Lessons are provided, therefore content is predictable Flexible schedule, can easily request time off if needed

    Cons

Conditions carry from center to center as they are individually owned and operated Having worked at multiple locations, experience is entirely dependent upon the owner and/ or center director at your center Exam Prep Tutors teach mostly out of a workbook, with scripted lessons. Not enough relevant and/or updated supplemental materials No benefits whatsoever for tutors Requires a four year degree, pays less... than babysitting. Hours vary by season and can be unpredictable (2-28 hours per week)

    Advice to Management

The Huntington brand and experience should be consistent, no matter what center you visit. Upper management needs to provide better training and support to franchise owners and directors so that both staff and students can expect the same experience at any given Huntington Center.
