I have been working at Huron Consulting Group full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Healthcare coverage is as good as you will get for a consulting firm

401k match is excellent (6%) and the plan itself is great

Coworkers are generally great to work with

PTO time is not tracked and work-life balance (at least in my division) is excellent.

Bonus can be nice depending on the year

    Cons

Lots of shakeups. Direction of the company and company structure seems to change every other month. It makes one feel not too confident in the future of the company

    Surprise layoffs destroy morale

Employee reviews could be better defined. You are essentially rated in a five-tier system, where 98% of people will be #3. It's essentially impossible to get above a 3 unless you are already considered for a promotion.

Pay is okay, but higher at other firms.

Too much management. It seems every day there are more directors and thus less people actually doing customer work.

    Advice to Management

Pay your consultants more. Stop shaking things up. Change the review process to make more sense; if a consultant regularly gets excellent feedback, they should not get the same rankings as everyone else just because they aren't considered for a promotion. Less corporate structure

    Pros

    Cons

Cronyism to be staffed, lack of transparency and communication from the high management.

    Advice to Management

Be open to new ideas and experiences from people that worked in other companies besides Huron.

    Pros

Excellent benefits and leverage of being a larger company with many locations around the world. The growth strategy has served it well for a long time.

    Cons

Lots of different business units with different levels of growth. Makes the company feel uneven with some groups surging while others are floundering.

    Advice to Management

Keep the focus on growing the core business and be careful about too much growth too quickly. It's exciting to move to something new, but if we don't spend enough time developing and maintaining the core parts of the business.

    Pros

Great, friendly people to work with

    Cons

Bad C-level management decisions cost many people jobs

    Advice to Management

Be more honest on company calls about overall direction of company. Too often management would give vague, non-informative answers after company layoffs. Things like "As of now, we aren't planning on this happening again..." (3 months later, it happens again). It makes you wonder if they are lying, or if they do not actually have control of the company's direction and are just hoping it won't happen again.

I worked at Huron Consulting Group full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Variety of projects all over the US and traveling is fun if that's your thing.

    Work hard, play hard.

    Cons

Your talents are silo'd into one specific area.
Your direct report literally make or break your project.
Too much heavy emphasis on the company growth evaluation. This leaves no room for individuals to shine in their way. The company wants cookie cutter consultants.
Pay is always lagging behind competitors by 2-3 years.
