    Pros

Entry level experience was good. Many facets of engineering were practiced.

    Cons

in latter years, employee moral was awful due to company downsizing / layoffs

    Advice to Management

Buy out by TDK may be the best thing that has happened to HTI.

I don't think there are any pros to this company.

    Cons

don't know when you will be let go.

    Advice to Management

Why are you keeping lazy people & letting good workers go?

I have been working at Hutchinson Technology full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Wages are fair and the benefits were good at one time. Very high tech equipment and clean work environment

    Cons

12 hour shifts, tracking overtime worked in case of a need to force someone to work, many benefits taken away, mandatory overtime enforced, poorly managed, supervisors not addressing issue when needed, letting good productive workers go and keeping ones who are a waste of space.

    Advice to Management

HTI had 75% of the market at one time and now it is sitting at about 15%, this is not because of the people working and putting out the parts. Biomed division dump it because it has gone no where. Upper management having orientation and lunch with employees hired through an employment service, what a slap in the face how about the employees that have stuck with the company through all the hard times! Good people are leaving left and right wake up management and get your act together!

    Pros

I will say the benefits were good, I think that the salaries were probably fairly competitive at the time, not sure if that is still the case.

    Cons

Again, Bad management. They really need to get some new blood. Whatever new ideas there are get quashed quickly. Just based on my experience with other companies, I'm shocked that the stockholders haven't kicked those guys to the curb.

    Advice to Management

I seriously do not think this management team has the ability to turn things around but if they have any hope, its let go of the past. inbreeding causes the same damage to a company as it does to horses.

I worked at Hutchinson Technology full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Good Salaries/Benefits
    Great people to work with.

    Cons

Management ran the company into the ground. Not willing to hire external management, everyone home grown to protect each other.

    Advice to Management

    Too late...

    Pros

If you like time off this company is constantly running out of work and sending you home on unpaid leave.

    Cons

Management failed keep up with technology. Hutchinson is making the equivalent of a record player while the market has started buying Mp3 players. Their technology is just getting outdated.

    Advice to Management

The lack of anything substantial from the new business development is embarrassing. Whoever is in charge of that division needs to be sacked and someone with some actual direction needs to be put in place.

    Pros

They pay really well, especially if you are a tech grade 3 or an Engineer. There are a lot of really smart, talented people there. They have (in TSA+) state-of-the-art equipment and a very nice facility.

    Cons

Very poor management. Numerous lay-offs (7 in the last 4 years, one was 48% of the company)

They have a tendency to replace supervisors, managers, etc they lay off with other management that have absolutely no background in that position other than the fact they have been there for 20+ years. (like the good-old-boy club) Rather than keep the best people for the best jobs and move forward and try to improve their situation, they take big steps back trying to re-learn everything over and over. Upper Management does not listen to the floor employees who actually do the work there. Instead they listen to the Dept Supervisors and Managers who are desperately trying to keep their jobs that they are by and large not qualified to do. It's unfortunate, because the bulk of the employees are really great people who seem to care more about the future of HTI through hard work and quality of product than most of the management. But this attitude is quickly winding down. The over-hanging fear of lay-offs or the entire operation moving to Thailand is very real and most people now do not believe what management tells them.

    Advice to Management

You had the opportunity to make TSA+ a success, but you layed off the wrong people. Now, all your product problems and machine problems are becoming more and more apparent because of your decision. Taking away EMTO, over-time and removing the smoke shacks will not help at this point. You need to own up to the fact that you cannot run TSA+ when your mindset is still stuck in 1980's Trace mode.
