I have been working at Hy-Vee part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Management is usually pretty relaxed
As a courtesy clerk, you get a lot of freedom
Good way to make friends and connections with local neighbors
If you're bad at small talk, you'll get better pretty quickly

    Cons

It can be a little boring if you get the long shifts

    I worked at Hy-Vee part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Time off when needed, if requested quickly

    Cons

Rude managers, rude upper management. Do not care about their employees. Was told on numerous occasions I was a great employee and they wanted to promote me, but never even made minimum wage in the months I worked there. Treated like garbage, disrespected, may as well have been a janitor for the work I did. Cleaning parking lots as 6am, cleaning diarrhea off the bathroom floors.

    Advice to Management

I know you're "employee owned", but maybe hire a cleaning service since you have to take workers away from their short-staffed duties to clean bathrooms and such. Very disgusting.

    I have been working at Hy-Vee part-time

    Pros

You meet a lot of nice customers and coworkers
    Employee discount is decent
    Employee holiday party
    It is fun

    Cons

Some Assistant Managers seem to pick favorites
You won't get much hours unless
    you're in management
I haven't even got my employee discount card yet

    Advice to Management

    Listen to your employees

    I worked at Hy-Vee part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Paid relatively well, when they scheduled me

    Cons

Didn't treat employees well by not giving them the hours they want, asked to fill in in departments you have no experience in, not an exciting or lively place to work

    Advice to Management

Make it a fun place to work, make people feel included

  5. "Within 3 months i was a courtesy clerk, checker, and customer service. Never got a raise. Never got more than 15 hrs/wk."

    I worked at Hy-Vee part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Good food
    Individual bathrooms
    Independence
    10% discounts on certain holidays
    Easy promotions

    Cons

    Schedule
Money organization (20's on the far left, not the right. If you were use to the 20's being on the right, well, make sure its on the left otherwise you'll get yelled at)
    Managers where abouts
    Not enough hours

    Advice to Management

Just because you're having a bad day, doesn't mean you have to make us have a bad day with your bad attitude. Don't assume we're doing nothing when you've been gone for more than an hour. Take the time to listen to your workers even when its busy.

    I worked at Hy-Vee part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Has a very friendly environment and safe area to work at. I really enjoyed working here because everyone is super encouraging

    Cons

Courtesy clerks are always being hired and that cut back some of my hours. Also, it sucked when i started working here because the need to know where everything is to grab last minute items for customers.

    Advice to Management

loved working here! was one of the best workers here but I stopped getting hours after my raise.

    Pros

I loved visiting with the customers and really enjoyed my coworkers at the Coralville Store.

    Cons

If you're a good worker you're likely to get stuck with the same icky jobs everyday.

    Advice to Management

You give out a lot of little extra's to the boys for doing their jobs, but not so much to the women.

    Pros

Being occupied for the whole shift. Meeting fellow employees the same age.

    Cons

Standing on feet for whole shifts can get redundant when you also have to go push cars out in heat or snow.

    Advice to Management

Be nicer to courtesy clerks they are the backbone of the company.

    I worked at Hy-Vee part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Opportunity to work in multiple departments. Not always stuck doing one job. Had quite a few raises. Great Holiday parties.

    Cons

Initially starting out- having to do carts and clean the bathrooms sucked. Favoritism. Uniforms sucked and we were not allowed to wear shorts but were made to go outside and push carts even during the 100 degree summers.

    Advice to Management

Don't overlook current employees for promotion just because they are a little younger.
