I have been working at Hy-Vee full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Work with some great people. The pay is not bad.

    Cons

some people work hard and others do not. They operate by seniority and not by whose best for a certain job. Employees with more seniority tend to do much less than people at the bottom. This leaves employees feeling resentful towards others. Management watches this happen and nothing is done about it. I've work for have 20yrs. Left for 3 weeks and was rehired. Lost all seniority.

    Advice to Management

Try to get on the same page when it comes to your rules. Don't change them to best suit your agenda. This leaves employees feeling resentment towards management and other employees.

    Pros

    ok pay, most employees fun

    Cons

bad management rude talk down to employees, I heard a kitchen manager call an employee fat, slow, worthless and more, I went to work as a full time employee worked my shift went to the schedule and I am off it, I ask why they said well you quit. I go to the director he says yea you quit I say no I did not so I guess I am fired. what's wrong with that picture

    Advice to Management

treat everyone the same, don't let your good employees go just because of rumors, shouldn't steal from places you do catering (wildlife)

I have been working at Hy-Vee (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Flexible Hours
Decent Pay(which can also be a con because I'm now accustom to my wage and can't find a job that pays the same)

    Cons

Upper management. I have no clue where they find these clowns but it seems to be a pretty consistent thing amongst Hy-Vee's around here to just get complete jack-offs to work upper management positions. These people are the worst- demand everything and do nothing themselves. I haven't seen a member of upper management down on the sales floor in weeks. PATHETIC!

    Advice to Management

Hire better people to run your stores.

    I worked at Hy-Vee full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Decent starting asst. mgr./manager salaries, benefits, retirement plans. You're on your feet a lot so you burn calories, as long as you don't eat all the free food in the back. Several employees to make friends with. I met quite a few characters working at HyVee.

    Cons

Dealing with hundreds/thousands of employees per day whining about coupons and not being able to have 20 transactions in order to abuse sale ads. Late and early hours for everyone outside of upper management. It's boring, pointless work- food comes in; food goes out. The uniforms are lame. Shouldn't have to wear a tie and button up shirt while lugging boxes and running around like a mad man all day. The meat department, the bakers, the kitchen staff, etc. all wear ties and button up shirts! Khaki and polo shirts work fine. Get with the times.

    Advice to Management

Don't take working a grocery store so seriously. People will always need food, if you provide normal food at fair prices, you don't need to polish it up with smiles in aisles and ties and other B.S.

    Pros

Nice Co-workers, very friendly shoppers, 5% discount on groceries and opportunitie for advancement.

    Cons

Management treats there employees very disrespectfully. You are not paid very well, and the only give you a review 1 every 2 years.

    Advice to Management

Treat others the way you wish to be treated.

    I worked at Hy-Vee part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Paid relatively well, when they scheduled me

    Cons

Didn't treat employees well by not giving them the hours they want, asked to fill in in departments you have no experience in, not an exciting or lively place to work

    Advice to Management

Make it a fun place to work, make people feel included

    Pros

    Friendly coworkers
    Nice customers
That is literally it. You don't get an employee discount, or any benefits. You're scheduled just below enough hours to get a lunch break

    Cons

    Nepotism
    Bad compensation
They didn't fire me, but just stopped scheduling me without notice. They messed up a lot of my paychecks as well

    I worked at Hy-Vee part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Good food
    Individual bathrooms
    Independence
    10% discounts on certain holidays
    Easy promotions

    Cons

    Schedule
Money organization (20's on the far left, not the right. If you were use to the 20's being on the right, well, make sure its on the left otherwise you'll get yelled at)
    Managers where abouts
    Not enough hours

    Advice to Management

Just because you're having a bad day, doesn't mean you have to make us have a bad day with your bad attitude. Don't assume we're doing nothing when you've been gone for more than an hour. Take the time to listen to your workers even when its busy.

    I worked at Hy-Vee part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Friendly atmosephere, some great employees, great customers

    Cons

The employees on the floor don't matter! HR only care about themselves, lots of drama, no communication between departments, barely any flexibility for students in some departments

    Advice to Management

Pay attention to your good employees
