Technical Account Manager

Being a woman in tech, I only recently started advocating for myself at work about advancement opportunities. Because of this I wanted to ask this question to my male counterparts. When you have 1:1's with your direct reports and talk about career growth / aspirations what is your managers’ response typically? I’d like to gauge how my experience (negative) differs from others. For instance are you met with blockades, enthusiasm, dread, etc?

    Off to a Great Start

    Aug 18, 2021 - R&D Manager in Westlake, OH

    Business Outlook

    Pros

Hyland provided great training to help you have a good understanding of the company and OnBase. Everyone is willing to help and answer questions. Great support for new team members!

    Cons

Everything is online. I know this is not just a Hyland thing, it is everywhere but it takes some getting used to. Looking forward to later in the year when I can go into the office and see some of my co-workers face to face.

Stuck in the 90's with clueless management

Aug 23, 2021 - Sales Account Executive in Kansas City, KS
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

    - Work from home -- thanks to the pandemic. - Can get away without working hard and doing 'busy work' - Onsite perks if you are in Westlake, OH

    Cons

    - The pay is poor and equity sharing is unheard of for a company whose CEO every Monday keeps talking about the fact this is a "big happy family". - Hyland is stuck in the '90s with multiple levels of management, processes, and approvals. You have to be based in Ohio and 'manage up' to get anywhere. Most of the C-Suite are incompetent and are around because they are a part of the 'old boys club'. - Hyland is a dumping ground for companies bought by Thoma Bravo. The management team has no clue of what to do with the technology and talent they have acquired and is slowly killing them. - Product management is a joke and has no clear future direction for the products from acquired companies. The direction changes every few weeks and the company is still struggling to run its solutions on the public cloud. - The Healthcare business unit operates as a company within a company and opportunities to grow are very limited if you are not in the inner circle.

    Hyland has grown too quickly

Jul 28, 2021 - Software Developer in Cleveland, OH
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Hyland is a great place to work if you are just out of college and need work experience. Many bright people are working at Hyland, and they are all willing to share knowledge and coach new people. Hyland is growing fast through organic and acquisition growth. The growth has led to many openings for career growth. Hyland allows people to work from home and provides reasonably up-to-date equipment. This is a must in the post-pandemic world. Hyland's products are best-in-class. You can feel proud about creating a good product.

    Cons

Many managers have some technical skills but lack the management acumen to lead teams and grow employees. Hyland let go a good number of employees and that destroyed loyalty and morale. Hyland has good and bad departments. Many support departments have poor leadership and unhappy employees. Hyland's internal systems and technology department need an overhaul. Employees are leaving for better pay and to leave the small number of bad bosses.

Still a great "place" to work

    May 12, 2021 - Manager
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Opportunities for movement within company Competitive compensation (for salaried workers) HR continuously evaluating/updating compensation plans to keep current with market

    Cons

A bit too bottom line focused. The opportunities Hyland provides for movement within the company can leave teams short handed. Many of our solutions are complex and we cannot replace many of these technical resources 1 for 1. New resources can take up to 18 months to become strong in several of our solutions. If we wait until a resource is needed, we are way behind the curve. Since we still have an income inequality problem in the US, with top level workers making 500 times that of the median worker, there are 0 excuses for the organization not being adequately staffed.

A company that has fallen behind

Jul 12, 2021 - Software Architect in Minneapolis, MN

    Business Outlook

    Pros

The company tries very hard to have a good culture. If you are just starting out in your career and don't need a competitive salary or good benefits, this could be the place for you to earn some experience for a few years.

    Cons

They company has fallen way behind in their efforts to modernize and go to the cloud. Upper management tries to act like that have control of the situation but they have no clue. The same people that got Hyland into the mess are the same ones trying to dig out of the hole. Some of us are trying hard to modernize, but this isn't a small agile company anymore. Processes, titles, and egos all stand in the way of real progress.

    Hyland Lacks Values

Jan 31, 2021 - Anonymous Employee in Westlake, OH
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

“OUR PEOPLE create amazing products and solutions that OUR CUSTOMERS enthusiastically adopt.“ - Bill Priemir “At Hyland, it's all about community“ - Ed McQuiston “Really Proud and Excited for all the great work we do at Hyland. I’ll put our team up against anyone in the industry.” - John Phelan

    Cons

1st: Stop padding reviews because you want to keep your 4 stars on Glassdoor doesn’t support our core values when you do. Hyland lacks: Honesty, Integrity, and Transparency. Also: Diversity, Fair Pay, and Vision. Here’s the thing, companies lay people off. This is nothing new. Does that make the situation better, no. Especially when a company can’t be honest with their employees, customers, or community about it. Hyland was able to contact the city of Westlake to ensure them “we’re doing fine”, but what about that team that John would put against anyone. They were left in the dark. The executive team and senior leadership are all hypocrites that can’t hide behind the free happy hours and Hyland culture, that we’ve all realized, means so little when you need to support a family or even just yourself. Many employees (even R&D) worked second jobs instead of leaving Hyland to make ends meet. Employees have been begging for fair pay and it got them the door. Working conditions across the board are awful. There’s very little diversity and a few workshops on Diversity won’t change that when the Executive team doesn’t lead by example on making real change.

    Abandon Ship!

Jan 27, 2021 - Software Developer in Westlake, OH
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

With covid there's hardly anything to really brag about at Hyland anymore. * Onsite daycare ($1.5k a month) * Fitness membership reimbursement (up to $200) * PTO and Flex days * Coworkers are generally nice people

    Cons

The company is filled with greed and incompetence. Hyland for 25+ years could never pay their workers a fair compensation, yet somehow broke record earnings year after year. On 1/27/2021 they laid off over a hundred dev and QA on a ZOOM call that lasted a whole 3 minutes. People that had been at the company for over 10+ years were literally told to logoff and ship your laptops back to headquarters. The most disrespectful thing I've ever seen a company do. Their lust for building a SAAS platform hasn't panned out because their senior architects haven't built a piece of software since 1996 when the company was founded. Enjoy watching their leadership give you a "vision" from the comfort of their Florida mansion. Seriously... This "vision" was proclaimed as, "We need to do things in the cloud". How profound. Senior managers are incompetent and can't make decisions. The entire management in R&D is former developers that got sick of looking at the garbage code they wrote as an intern and decided to move into management. All new positions are now opening in India and Poland. Be prepared to work with people barely speaking English that throw code at a wall and hope it sticks.

    Pros

    Flexible work options. Decent benefits.

    Cons

Biggest con is that some of their benefits are lacking in comparison to other employers of their nature. Overall their benefits are fine/good, however there are many other tech Companies out there with better benefits/pay than hyland.

    Great company to work for!

    Pros

Amazing training to get you oriented, friendly co-workers, and amazing benefits. There's so much room for growth and development, you really could stay here your entire career!

    Cons

So many employees are working entirely remote now, you do miss out on some of the interactions that make Hyland feel like a second home with so many people being gone!

    Great People and Culture

    May 4, 2021 - Process Engineer
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Hyland has really great people and focuses their hiring around culture to ensure this is a lasting attribute. Their employee engagement team, employee resource groups, HR, and overall leadership support the existing culture better than most companies I've seen!

    Cons

Hyland struggles with a lot of legacy practices and products and the change management process has been varied. I have full confidence in the direction, however it will be a transition period and culture adjustment as a global business.
