I worked at Hyundai Motor America full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Good HR events, you'll get more free food /events to appreciate employees, communities, culture, etc. Company is small enough to know everyone you work with, but big enough to get global automotive industry experience

    Cons

Hard to get promotions, has a ceiling on how many promotions/new employees each department can add, which is approved by the mother-ship in Korea--count is very limited. Promotions, bonuses, transition from contract to full-time is all based on seniority/network and not based on how well you do your job. Not a great place for career growth.

I have been working at Hyundai Motor America full-time

    Pros

The HMA HQ building in Fountain Valley, CA is nice.

    Cons

Unequal distribution of work. Some groups work their butts off and others have it easy always having time to join different ERG groups. Some groups have to juggle workload, accommodate instructions coming down from HMC in Korea, and manage various projects. Promotions come easy in some departments and not others. In some departments, you see individuals getting promoted...

    Advice to Management

Is the many levels of management really necessary? We need worker bees not more top management. Review organization structure and have department heads redistribute workload.

I worked at Hyundai Motor America full-time for more than 5 years

      Pros

The company has wonderful employees and great benefits including a monthly car allowance for some employees. It is also an exciting industry to be in.

      Cons

Direction from parent corporation in Korea can be confusing and inconsistent.

      Advice to Management

Focus on employee satisfaction and doing the right thing for employees.

I worked at Hyundai Motor America full-time for more than 10 years

      Pros

New building that offers an employee cafeteria, dry cleaning, and an employee gym. Company also offers employee leases for all Hyundai and Genesis models.

      Cons

Oppressive South Korean micromanagement stifles the ability of American managers to react and adapt to the rapidly changing tastes of the American consumer. As a result, Hyundai missed the opportunity to move from a heavy emphasis on passenger cars to crossovers and SUVS. Rather than respecting and listening to American managers with decades of experience in the automotive...

I worked at Hyundai Motor America full-time for more than a year

      Pros

      Nice people, lots of work

      Cons

Even though Hyundai America is a US company the corporate office is "managed" by Hyundai in Korea. There are Korean "supervisors" in Fountain Valley and their only job is to report back to Korea what's going on. Salaries are low, many people are there because they need a job.

I have been working at Hyundai Motor America full-time for more than 3 years

      Pros

Great people, good working environment, stable, nice location. Management and HR try to do the right thing. Good work-life balance.

      Cons

No clear objectives/business strategy, Korea runs the show - nothing significant can be done without their approval. Must be there 8.5 hours a day even for salaried positions, and during certain hours, or your manager will get a "report"

      Advice to Management

Press harder on Korea to agree to flexible working arrangements (flexible hours, working from home, etc.) Most successful companies have this already and you will keep losing people until you catch up.

I have been working at Hyundai Motor America

      Pros

Cafeteria has decent food at least.

      Cons

Getting directions from South Korea, no one is listened to here. It doesn't matter what lower management does, upper management will find a way to bring their own unique (usually wrong) idea and implement it at their will. Theres really nothing good to say about this company. It's terrible.

I have been working at Hyundai Motor America full-time for less than a year

      Pros

Been on the job for a short period and really getting to know some great people. Dynamic organization with people with their heart in the work.

      Cons

Getting used to the layers of having to report through Korea which seems to slow the decision making process... but slowly getting how that works.

I worked at Hyundai Motor America

      Pros

Most co-workers share a common goal. The work pace is fast, furious, and exciting. Most American staff stick together to make this company work in the USA. Salaries and benefits are competitive with other automotive importers in Southern California.

      Cons

The off-shore management attempts to run the company as if it is still in Korea. They seem to refuse to adjust to American culture and customs. Decisions are frequently made by invisible senior management in Korea. Korean-American staff frequently receive preferential treatment in terms of...
