I worked at IBM full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Diversity of opportunities and engagements. Always interesting.

    Cons

Internal complexity and conflict, struggling to maintain relevancy with client base in dynamically changing industry environment.

    Advice to Management

Reduce conflict across brands through establishing proper account management. Make upfront investment in shared services platforms (cloud, SaaS) rather than resorting to old age cost plus models.

I worked at IBM full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

A big company where it is easy for people to hide, which can be a positive and a negative. They do work well with business partners.

    Cons

Lots of good people left the organisation over the past few years. So often you end up with sales people who have little knowledge of what they are selling. This is also happening at a time of transition for IBM as they move to a very different world of the cloud.

    Advice to Management

Keep supporting your channel partners as that is where much of your product sales expertise now works.

I have been working at IBM full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    - There are top-notch people that you run into
    - Work-from-home is still very good, at least in my country
    - Relaxed atmosphere at my levels
    - Good community of overseas employees, which enables work to be performed after-hours.

    Cons

    - Seemingly constant Resource Action cycles have demoralized the staff (even the HR department)
    - Pay is lower end
    - Teams are too small for what they are being asked to do, so work-life balance suffers
    - Mismatch between what management says and then what they do
    - I've watched people hand train their replacements.
    - Many overseas employees with which I interact seem to have little drive for excellence or take responsibility for their roles, and no one seems to force them to do so. Local employees wind up taking up the slack.

    Advice to Management

Tom Watson's principles were the best - Return to "Respect for the Individual" as your primary value, especially torwards employees, and Customer Satisfaction and Excellence will return along with the revenue and profits which you seek

Right now, it more seems to me that you're strangling the golden-egg laying goose (aka. the employees), and it doesn't have much life left in it. Stop before it's too late!!

    I worked at IBM full-time

    Pros

Will give you experience beyond what anyone else will provide and thereby accelerate your career.

Mature processes, work with some brilliant people, push you to new limits

    Cons

Low wage for role performed, even government pays more

Dont want u there for more than 5 years, have an exit plan.

Have one way of doing things and other employers wont want you if you have been there too long

Bad name with other employers, employees often burnt out and exploited, become damaged goods. Have an exit plan!!

Terrible culture of working 50 hr weeks, dont believe for 1 sec you will work 37.5hrs!! I workwd 16 hour days m-f for 6 months once.

No bonus, no rewards, nonpayrises. I was a hr mgr, dont believe the 12% bonus crap, no mgr was allowed to give more than 5% EVER! And most were 1-3% and thats when people were killing themselves for the glorious company.

This is a bad place to work, but it will make you stronger. Have a 2 year plan, wxit by 3 - its what they want anyway!!

    Advice to Management

They are PEOPLE. Not resources! Stop lying about bonuses and rewards, offer real pay rises, stop the lying!!
