IBM leaders recently went to Texas to fight against discriminatory pending bill. IBM has a great track record and commitment to diversity and inclusion. Recently expanding its LGBT+ and Ally program around the globe

    Advice to Management

Keep up LGBT+ training in Mgmt 101 course. Join the Ally 365 Program.

I have been working at IBM full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Love the people I work with, passionate and hard working
Some teams, individuals are over-worked and other under-worked, seems like its up to the team management and how they position their yearly objectives
Lots of opportunities to move around the company, in 5 years I've finally found my home after two other spots

    Cons

Big company issues like disconnected HR, company wide regulations that may not make sense for your team, your location
Advancement is difficult, lots of people join and stay their whole careers, some adjust with the times and other do not making innovating harder than necessary

    Advice to Management

Take sometime to invest in the employees, good people are harder to find than you think

I worked at IBM full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I had an amazing manager, the environment truly embraces the help everyone out attitude. Benefits and pay are within standard with the competition.

    Cons

Management ontop of management, as with any large company IBM is slow to change direction. Normally I would not list this as a con abut IBM is trying to be agile and "move the ship" in another direction. In the sales roles you are "encouraged" to sale what meets the customers needs but in reality you will not be around long if you do since you need to hit the pavement hard on what you do get "paid for". There is a balance here as with any sales role but long days and nights will be the sacrifice needed. In sales don't expect any real CRM tool, generating leads will be tough as there is no prospect tools that are reliable.

    Advice to Management

Completely restructure sales departments. Everyone in sales should know at a high level the entire portfolio, require (incentivize) a mix of products that is appropriate for their product. For example, BA should have a healthy mix of DB. Lay off the marketing and sales for products that are not ready to be largely scaled. Stop the piggybacking of opportunities in sales.

I worked at IBM (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Fantastically gifted technical staff
Easy to work remotely (infrastructure/IT)supports this
    Global presence

    Cons

Constant worry about job loss (reorgs/downsizings) so difficult to plan projects at work or home.
Short-sighted executive vision, myopic focus on "quarter results" without the flexibility needed in a large, diverse organization
Regular "harvesting" of old timers (you are old when you are 55, and face layoff)

    Advice to Management

In the beginning of my IBM career i was loyal, worked long hours willingly (nights and weekends) because i felt that if I did my best as an employee for my company then they would reciprocate. So i was skilled, well-educated, honest, hard-working, and was motivated to do my best in all things. After I reached the magic age of 55 I was let go. My boss said '...I don't have a job for you'. My record over the year included awards, patent filings, raises, bonuses, etc...I spent a long time trying to figure out what I did wrong. There was nothing wrong, just I became expensive when compared with non-USA new hires.

So, the experience really soured me for the whole IT industry.
My advice is...remember that corporations rise and/or fall when their goodness is chipped away by bad faith, bad behavior, etc. If you are not nice to your employees, then your customers and business partners will notice this and ultimately it will factor into their decision about doing business with you.

You can keep the corporate boat afloat and still preserve American jobs. When, IBM, did you stop believing that you could? It's all about ethics and principles.
