I worked at IBM full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good place to get your start and learn about technology. You will get to understand the dynamics of different business models(i.e. SaaS/PaaS/Hardware/On-Prem Software) and learn about new technologies (i.e. blockchain, AI, Quantum). Option to work from home which lets you avoid the commute.

    Cons

Compensation is below market; my base pay was comparable to average pay according to Glassdoor but the bonus was basically non-existent. I literally got ~$700 after tax for the bonus! Many underfunded products/projects and long lead times to get things done lead to subpar products that aren't competitive. No ability to retain good talent; see good people who can leave defect to other tech companies (i.e. Google, Microsoft, Salesforce, Startups, etc.) all the time. Lack of opportunity to grow in the company. Since IBM is shrinking, there are almost no attractive opportunities to switch roles and get promoted. IBM is getting it's butt kicked by Google, Amazon, and Microsoft in IaaS/SaaS/PaaS and AI and it is unlikely IBM will be able to reverse this market trend anytime soon. Senior Management is too secure in their positions. IBM has underperformed vs. peers for a decade yet most of the Senior Management team have retained their positions.

    Advice to Management

IBM has too many mediocre products...better to do a few things well and be a leader in those markets than doing a lot of things that are mediocre. Overall tech talent is poor....if you want to compete with tech companies for talent you need to match compensation and other benefits such as free food.

I have been working at IBM full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    salary, remote work at home

    Cons

Need to work more than 60 hours a week. Have to work on vacations, evenings and weekends due to the demands of the sales organization. No respect for the employee. Staff is refreshed constantly regardless of the performance of the individual. Seasoned employees are encouraged to leave the business so young and less talent can be brought in. Support roles are sent offshore where there is no understanding of the business.

I have been working at IBM full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

With IBM for 25 years..... I've seen IBM's leadership transform to understand and advocate for LGBT rights in all countries. There are countries and states, which do not have laws about rights for our community, and IBM has negotiated and educated some to understand the value our GLBT diversity brings to the market and spending power. Last time I checked we had 42 Out Executives in IBM world wide, imagine that!

    Cons

No matter where you are there are still people afraid and confused about our journey in life.

    Advice to Management

Stay/Get educated on diversity groups and if you are unfamiliar/uncomfortable with LGBT, find a LGBT mentor to help you understand the life style and the challenges our community runs up against. We have families, friends, advocates and misunderstood individuals in our life's. Don't treat us any differently than you would your own wife, husband or child, sister, brother or cousin, and respect the fact that this is not a choice, we are who we are and god loves all.

I have been working at IBM full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

There's plenty to do, and plenty of growth when you're innovative.

    Cons

    Budget cuts come to often.

    Advice to Management

Help to grow skills and encourage it, don't just dump it on a website and expect all to follow. The amount of content can be overwhelming for someone new.

I have been working at IBM full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

For someone like me - extremely dedicated to my job, hard-working, always going the extra mile - IBM has been a great place to work. IBM is a high performing company and expects its employees to be high-performing as well. I have had very little issues acclimating myself into the IBM culture. The salary is competitive and the benefits are excellent. And with such a large and diverse company, the opportunities for growth and for branching out into different technologies/markets are great.

    Cons

If you are someone who wants to do the minimum... who watches the clock for that eight-hour mark so you can sprint out the door... who does not want to be in a competitive and high performing environment... IBM is probably not the place for you.
