I worked at IBM as an intern (More than a year)

    Pros

Great research areas and ideas ongoing in Watson.

    Cons

This is a large corporation, so there are some challenges that may come naturally with such large organizations.

    Pros

    - a lot of great people still around, although the cull of senior resources is relentless
    - when multiple IBM brands work well together, the depth and breadth of what can be offered to clients is unmatched

    Cons

    - "What have you done for me yesterday?" Working for IBM these days feels more like contracting
    - Where is Watson?
    - Marketing slogans posturing as strategy

I worked at IBM full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Excellent Minds to work alongside.

    Cons

Can be slow adapting to change, particularly among senior managers' trepidations to risk their long-term standing

    Advice to Management

Encourage C level to change without fear of excessive reprimand, especially as IBM is touted as an industry engine for change

I have been working at IBM full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Our team is full of experts in distinguished field. They are friendly, collaborative and reachable in any circumstances.

    Cons

The team members are all spread all over the country. That sometimes block the progress. But, this is what it is.

I have been working at IBM full-time

    Pros

    - Able to touch multiple levels of code
    - Write code designed to scale for millions of users
    - Hours are generally 40 per week
    - Company really tries to make you succeed / have you learn
    - Watson Health is trying to solve hard/interesting/good problems
    - Office is in an amazing location (for Cambridge, MA)

    Cons

    - No food (yet?)
    - A lot of audio conferencing (small push to video conferencing)
    - A lot of young engineers, lacking senior engineers
    - Slow moving (healthcare has a lot of red tape)

    Advice to Management

Invest in food! Push hard for video conferencing everywhere, to the point it's an anomaly to see an audio conference (at least for the engineers). Important since the teams can be so spread out geographically.

I worked at IBM as an intern

    Pros

Great office. Flexible hours. Ability to talk to anyone at the office. Standing/sitting desks. Fun to work with other interns.

    Cons

Not a ton of difficult work. I was basically doing software develop even though I had a research intern time

I have been working at IBM full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

In the software groups, IBM provides seemingly endless technical challenges and opportunity for professional growth. IBM also offers the opportunity for changing roles. I, for example, have had the opportunity to grow through a variety of software development, technical sales, and corporate acquisition roles -- all without leaving for another company.

    Cons

IBM has had its challenges adapting to a cloud dominated world. Change is a constant, and anyone uncomfortable with change would find this a tough place to work.

I worked at IBM full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Absolutely nothing positive can be said about this company with any division that is related to Watson; management or otherwise.

    Cons

First to explain the background. I worked for IBM in a different city for 2 years. Due to my personal career goals, I wanted to work in a division that was with Watson. At the time, I believed all their Watson products were heavily invested in and worked well. I was part of Watson Analytics. I was wrong.

The product wasn't ready to send to market, and many customers were duped and mislead on what the platform could actually do. I'm sure people are reading about how Watson-anything was overhyped.

So I relocated from this one city that had my whole life there. Friends, family, etc...to grow my career...to another city roughly 8 hours away.

The management I had under this new team, were the worst managers I have ever had in my entire professional career. Pay raises that were promised to me for switching roles were unable to be placed, and when they finally were able to increase the rate...it was half of what they promised and they were only able to backpay me for 2 months when I was there for half a year. My last manager there needs to have an HR case put against him for never showing up to work, showing up to work high, and leaving at very early times throughout the day to never return.

IBM effectively ruined my life for about a year, but I'm bouncing back stronger than ever at a company that cares about its employees.

Never going back to IBM, and no one should work there. Let this company slowly die on the vine it grew.

    Advice to Management

You need to have a mass purge of your middle level management. They are incompetent on so many levels, but they are impossible to get rid of since the teams below them, and the VPs above them, shuffle so frequently. They can fly under the radar for years doing a terrible job without any consequence.
