I worked at IBM full-time for more than 4 years

    Pros

Big company where it’s easy to hide / be lost if that is your desire (not mine). Interesting projects for some, resources are available on priority projects

    Cons

Management spreads resources too thin with too many projects approved and not enough resources per project Despite name no amazing AI brought to market No bonus for years Poor morale Layoffs

    Advice to Management

Listen to employees, focus on fewer big bets, invest in projects both legacy and strategic as legacy customers feel left out to dry. Stop rewarding senior management when vast majority of employees don’t make bonus when senior management sets targets and objectives, not only is it unfair but creates poor optics / morale.

I worked at IBM full-time for more than 6 years

    Pros

Encouraged to give your best self everyday. It’s very rewarding. Leadership is top notch. Great mentor culture. Senior leadership is breeding best in class marketeers, watch out world!!

    Cons

Co-location created a glass ceiling for professional growth. Unless you’re willing to pick up your family and have your spouse quite their job to move to an approved “hub” location. And the hubs are not in easily accessible or affordable cities. Clearly I was bummed about this strategy!

    Advice to Management

Collocation as a strategy just didn’t add up for me. Not just bc I was affected by it, but also bc the offices were too crammed and too noisy to enable folks to focus and be productive. There must be a better solution.

    Pros

coworkers, lots to learn, can move around, can bury head and work, good advancement but you need to drive it

    Cons

a lot depends on your manager for you to get ahead

    Advice to Management

better training, you keep cutting back and are spreading too thin and losing folks with historical knowledge.

    Positive Outlook

I worked at IBM for more than a year

    Pros

You're treated like a member of the team for the duration of your project and the pay for an internship is amazing. People who work there are the most normal/relaxed geniuses I've ever met.

    Cons

I can't remember anything I didn't love about the experience. The only con was that I let my team down with one of my research papers and felt like I blew it for my chance at a full-time position in the future.

    Advice to Management

Providing some guidelines for success to interns at the start of the internship might be useful, but I think maybe this is a team-by-team thing

I worked at IBM full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Smart coworkers, good extended benefits (family leave, financial assistance, etc), work from home policy.

    Cons

IBM, Watson Health included, conducts layoffs every few months and the breadth is never shared with employees or the public. The constant fear of losing jobs created a toxic environment where coworkers try to prove their worth to the company at the expense of other team members. The severance package is not good or fair for employees that have been let go. Upper management is not transparent at all.
