I worked at IBM as an intern (More than a year)

    Pros

The work flexibility here is absolutely amazing– I regularly took Fridays to work from home and my July 4 weekend was great. However…

    Cons

Management can be a disaster and the reality of working at a 400k+ person company becomes apparent when nothing gets done at a large scale.

I worked at IBM as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Incredible facilities, very smart researchers, good talks, understanding management.

    Cons

    Not quite enough free stuff.

    Advice to Management

Give the interns a T-Shirt! Keep up everything else that you do. I loved my 12 weeks at IBM Research.

I have been working at IBM (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Work life balance is good, though this is now changing as they force all employees to work full time from an IBM office (IBM used to be much more open to working from home) . Salaries are above market average

    Cons

Layoffs, feels unstable, executive make up new policies to make life a little more difficult and push employees out- they don't calling it layoffs but effectively that's what it is - workforce redaction - the side effect of this practice is that the good/strong employees leave and the mediocre ones stay.

Every other month there is a new big strategic shift, which usually goes nowhere bcz they don't give it enough time to takeoff before they shift again.
Too much short term thinking, focused on immediate revenue with very little investment in r&d.

In IBM you are a little screw in a big machine, and they make you feel that way every day.

    Advice to Management

    1. start investing in your employees
    2. Stop zigzagging with your strategy
    3. Invest in r&d and long-term projects

Keep transforming and keep making cognitive computing a reality!

I have been working at IBM full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Generous salary and benefits.

    Cons

Quarterly layoffs. Regardless of your success/knowledge/skills, you will be laid-off. Unless you are friends with an executive.

The constant cloud of losing your position hovers over your daily work. It has resulted in a large number of quality employees leaving the company.

    Advice to Management

There are too many of you. Lessen the number of VPs, Directors, and Managers. Focus on keeping your employees!

I have been working at IBM full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great coworkers. Work at home. Decent benefits. Challenging work.

    Cons

Toxic climate. Work 12 hour days and weekends or get laid off. Morale is at an all time low. Products no longer competitive in the marketplace.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of the dinosaurs at the top, especially the CEO with 20 straight quarters of non performance.
