I have been working at IBM full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

+ People are warm, welcoming, humble, intellectually curious (IBM Research)
+ Cambridge office is a great work space, collaborative and full of natural light
+ Partnerships with MIT and proximity to Harvard make for great joint-research opportunities
+ Good balance of academic and business-driven mindset
+ Access to higher ups; strong sense they are invested in me and my success

    Cons

+ Orientation is not great; you need to take initiative to bring yourself up to speed
+ Big company; takes time to grasp what's going on outside your own group

I worked at IBM full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Encouraged to give your best self everyday. It’s very rewarding. Leadership is top notch. Great mentor culture. Senior leadership is breeding best in class marketeers, watch out world!!

    Cons

Co-location created a glass ceiling for professional growth. Unless you’re willing to pick up your family and have your spouse quite their job to move to an approved “hub” location. And the hubs are not in easily accessible or affordable cities. Clearly I was bummed about this strategy!

    Advice to Management

Collocation as a strategy just didn’t add up for me. Not just bc I was affected by it, but also bc the offices were too crammed and too noisy to enable folks to focus and be productive. There must be a better solution.

I worked at IBM full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great people! Good benefits. Diverse workplace.

    Cons

Changes in company strategy often led to mixed messages from upper management.

    Pros

coworkers, lots to learn, can move around, can bury head and work, good advancement but you need to drive it

    Cons

a lot depends on your manager for you to get ahead

    Advice to Management

better training, you keep cutting back and are spreading too thin and losing folks with historical knowledge.

I worked at IBM as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

You're treated like a member of the team for the duration of your project and the pay for an internship is amazing. People who work there are the most normal/relaxed geniuses I've ever met.

    Cons

I can't remember anything I didn't love about the experience. The only con was that I let my team down with one of my research papers and felt like I blew it for my chance at a full-time position in the future.

    Advice to Management

Providing some guidelines for success to interns at the start of the internship might be useful, but I think maybe this is a team-by-team thing

I worked at IBM full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Smart coworkers, good extended benefits (family leave, financial assistance, etc), work from home policy.

    Cons

IBM, Watson Health included, conducts layoffs every few months and the breadth is never shared with employees or the public. The constant fear of losing jobs created a toxic environment where coworkers try to prove their worth to the company at the expense of other team members. The severance package is not good or fair for employees that have been let go. Upper management is not transparent at all.

Increase investment in innovation and clarify cloud strategy.

    Pros

    Easy access to training
    Opportunities to manage exciting projects
Great teams and the ability to work globally
    Strong name recognition world wide
    Great 401K match

    Cons

Every day you are one day closer to being laid off
Salary does not keep up with marketplace
    Constant churn of management team

    Advice to Management

No....there is little interest in employee feedback

I have been working at IBM full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

There's some decent job security, depending on your position.

    Cons

Salary increases are hard to get. You often have to jump through hoops and prove yourself to your management team, which often can change and leave you starting at the beginning again to prove yourself. The salary band structure is confusing.

I have been working at IBM full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Less politics. Code code code.
    - Build and develop everything from scratch.
    - Real impact in healthcare (industry leader in GxP cloud).
    - Decent new stacks especially in Big Data area.
    - Robust & well-built automation platform.
    - Microservice design.
    - Agile & small team.
    - Slack, latest macbook series, brand new building, open office.
    - Stellar engineers.
    - Many top engineers join Watson Health from other IBM division. This tells a lot.
    - Relatively young and new fast-paced environment.
    - The project many times mentioned by Ginni in tech talks.
    - You feel important and have a rewarding contribution.

Feels like a growing startup inside tech giant.
Does not feel like traditional IBM.
    We hate traditional IBM.
    We moved on.
    Join Watson Health.

    Cons

    - No free food.
    - Pay is flat standard in Cambridge - behind G, FB, APPL, AMZ by far.
    - Still seeing old-timers IBM zombies with thinkpad and sametime messenger roaming around every once in a while. Frusrating.
    - The way we conduct all-hands meeting, review, training, paperworks, at many times are still very old-school despite new engineering tools invested.

Again, the biggest downside is the IBM general outlook.
We suffer a lot from this.

    Advice to Management

Continue to improve the culture, invest more on people.
