I worked at IBM full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

excellent technology company with a recognized brand worldwide. A career where there is endless technology job possibilities for qualified staff. Contact made throughout the IT industry.

    Cons

IBM is a place that is not for everyone. IBM allows you freedom to fail and freedom to succeed. The choice is yours but be ready when you first start to wear the eight stripe logo

    Advice to Management

Never settle for anything less that total customer satisfaction, and staff excellence. Leave the political influence to the Sr. Management and not the staff.

I have been working at IBM (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    - High quality colleagues, team rigor for new innovations and emerging business models
    - Great new Design agency and workshops for offerings
    - Push employees to stay continually educated on latest technologies and trends, examples: Think Fridays, Cognitive Build contest with far flung teaming opportunities, free Company Online courses

    Cons

    - Still too many layoffs, culling down employee population due to transition
    - Losing some great people due to some managers that aren't listening

    Advice to Management

    - Don't be tied to old overly conservative metrics for M&As - we lose out on opportunities
    - Keep investing in future tech, be bold

I worked at IBM full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

IBM offers a pretty good work life balance which is great for parents and families.

    Cons

Years ago I would have given this company a solid 4 but lately so many positions have been lifted and shifted over seas. Every quarter you find yourself holding your breath hoping not to get "the call" telling you your job is moving to another country.

    Advice to Management

I would ask for management to be more involved with employees all during the year and not just during PBC time.

    Pros

There are no good reasons to work for this company. They are full of bullies who only know this way to be!

I worked at IBM full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great company to work for. Respect of the individual. Creativity was highly encouraged. Excellent mix of assignments. Incredible people. Fun, positive work environment. Great
    pay and benefits.

    Cons

Sold some incredible technology, product lines, and skilled professionals that left some voids that need to be backfilled with new strategic initiatives and alliances. I have no doubt they will bounce back and get the stock value back to the $190-200 per share range.

    Advice to Management

Fully confident in the management team.

    Pros

    Ability to work from home
Large number of opportunities if willing to relocate
    Diverse group of intelligent people

    Cons

    Poor Worklife Balancing
First level managers have little to no power to impact anything
    Glass Ceiling for non executives
    Poor Bonus Structure

    Advice to Management

IBM has a large group of talented people. The processes in IBM are good to average, but they require constant monitoring and adjustment. IBM management is under the impression that all of our processes are so perfect that they can just continue to reduce the amount of people associated with them. They seem to be totally disconnected on how much effort is required. Even when they reduce people they still expect the same or more amount of information. If reductions have to take place then decisions have to be made as to what is not going to be done any longer. Doing more with less only works for so long.

    Pros

Stability. The main reason to work for IBM is stability. IBM is less likely to be affected as much as other companies to swings in the job market.

    Cons

You do not join IBM Software Group because you are a risk taker. This is a place for the risk adverse and it shows within the company. Many within IBM plateau. They do enough to take a paycheck but nothing more. They are not fired up to make the company grow and succeed. It is a place to hide but still take home a decent paycheck.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of dead weight. Be more aggressive on divisions' contributions to the bottom line. Especially for development teams. Reduce base pay and increase variable pay. This way individual contributors are not motivated to "hide" in Software Group but will leave by their own free will when compensation is commensurate with their contribution. For instance, it is not right that a rising band 8 is paid less than a band 9 that is dead weight. Many managers are afraid to give out PBC 4 ratings because of legal recourse and feel a 3 is too much work over time.
