I worked at IBM full-time for more than 20 years

      Pros

      * Many good co-workers * Variety of projects

      Cons

      * Management exploits employees, no real concern for employee or family life * Arbitrary measurement systems and bonus metrics * The best-skilled people have either left or are looking to leave

      Advice to Management

      * Return to your core value/belief system * As the job market has tightened so much recently, you will be paying the price for ceasing to value your employees * Think long-term, not quarter-to-quarter * Return to training employees (and not requiring they get training on their own time)

I worked at IBM full-time for more than 4 years

      Pros

Lot's of smart people, perks, reach, and resources.

      Cons

Depends on the team, but in general lot's of reorgs, too many complacent lifers, and very shortsighted knee-jerk leadership.

      Advice to Management

Leadership needs to be transparent and realistic. The magical thinking does not look good on you.

Former Employee - Software Developer in Charlotte, NC

I worked at IBM full-time for more than 4 years

      Pros

well built structure of management and departments. Benefits are pretty good.

      Cons

just like any corporation, there is a spider web of politics within and across teams. For most employees that are not team lead or manager, there seems to be almost no opportunity to get promoted no matter how much effort and work you put into. (Unless you are well connected with managers. ) People move up the ladder in the corp seemed to know how to play pawns for their needs.

I have been working at IBM full-time for more than 4 years

      Pros

At least it is a job.

      Cons

Very disorganized structure or maybe It's just vague by design. Products are overly complex and doesn't hold up to competitors. IBM just barly meets SLAs with customers, or doesn't meet SLA and tries to cover it up. No upward mobility for technicians. Several lay-offs a year. Regularly furloughs contractors. No raises and bonuses are very small and rare or non-existant. Yearly training requirements but it doesn't...

      Advice to Management

IBM needs to acknowledge the fact that their employees are the companies bread and butter. Make money by doing better work or making better products, not by slashing overhead i.e. shrink resources. Treat employees as assets and that will reflect in their quality of work. Do right by your customers instead of the bare minimum. Make managers and teams more permanent because constant restructuring does not allow for...

      Pros

Creativity , some of awesome supportive manager for your work, gr8 place to explore new technology.

      Cons

Better not to interact ppl who does politics and take your work credit and if anything goes wrong such ppl point to you

      Advice to Management

Only I see 30% of team member work and not some managers and Sr. Managers don't give credit. If Managers is at onsite... They don't carry who are you and how good you are.
