I worked at IBM as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

The internship was a fascinating peek into big corporations: the processes, and the organization.

The location was great (Pangu Plaza in Beijing). My co-workers were all true professionals. I never had issues with HR or misc. administrative stuff.

The company intranet was a treasure chest of knowledge if you know where to look. I took several course and found at least half of them useful.

My manager gave me a lot of freedom time-wise and focus-wise. I was also told that the flexibility was a general theme of work culture at IBM, at least in the sales team.

    Cons

The autonomy was both a blessing and a curse. As someone new to sales, I wish there were more guidance about where to start and how to start a conversation with a client.

I came at a time when IBM was pivoting to cloud services from server hardware. Being on the hardware team, I found finding a sales pitch difficult as there simply wasn't much integration between the server hardware and the great services they were providing.

    Advice to Management

Not sure where the market stands now but I think with the premium that IBM's server hardware commands, IBM should promote a package of hardware and services instead keeping the teams mostly separate.

Do not only focus on that hot trend project but also the traditional ones.

I have been working at IBM full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

IBM is my current employer and probably will be the last one. Being a member of LGBT+ community in China, one has to face in everyday life struggles both in workplace and in personal life. However, the inclusive environment in IBM ease my pain in workplace as in IBM, I can bring my whole self to workplace as IBM acknowledges and respects differences. One is only evaluated for his/her abilities, not his/her race, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, etc. I am based in Beijing, China which LGBT+ culture is OK, however back in 2011, IBM China has already provided exactly the same benefits to LGBT+ employees which was the first. Furthermore, IBM also provides targeted LGBT+ leadership development opportunities which not only you can be yourself, but advance your career. The well-established Business Resource Groups (BRGs) also provide employees network where one could reach others easily and grow together. IBM's strong position in LGBT+ diversity and inclusion is always an inspiration for those who wants to have a career rather than a job, even in the rather conservative oriental cultures.

    Cons

The first few years before I could be myself and hid in the closet, after I came out as an openly gay, I could bring my whole self to workplace, I am now in a better place that I could fully contribute myself.

    Advice to Management

Keep supporting the great D&I, as always been there.

Good for people like taking challenges all the time. Also good for people don't like challenges at all.

    Cons

It's a big, really big, company. Expect all sorts of difficulty come with big company.
