I have been working at IBM full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    - IBM gives mobile employees incredible freedom to work from home or from an IBM office
    - IBM generally pays fairly well, but most IBMers are on a leveraged sales quota plan that can vary widely depending on sales success.
    - If you enjoy travel, IBM offers plenty of opportunity to travel.
    - IBM provides employees with many options for devices: Apple products - including MacBooks, iPhones & iPads; Lenovo laptops, and B.Y.O.D. options for phone.
    - IBM places a high value on mentoring; there are opportunities to get involved with formal mentor programs and IBMers tend to be very open to "unofficial" mentoring relationships for those seeking advice/guidance in their career

    Cons

    - IBM is a highly sales-driven organization and pressure from the top-down has created an ultra-competitive environment that sometimes feels like "everyone for themselves."
    - Job security isn't super strong: Re-organizations and realignments are commonplace and "resource actions" (aka - down sizing) are not uncommon either.
    - IBM talks a lot about "career mobility," but doesn't always "practice what they preach."

I have been working at IBM full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The people are wonderful, bright and professional. First Line Managers in my experience are superb.

    Cons

Quarterly layoffs since IBM hasn't hit Wall Street earnings for 22 straight quarters. There is no job security here. Quotas have been set so high the sales force isn't earning any commissions in comparison to past years; this is a way of cost savings. IBM is a depressing place to work when you know regardless of your effort they will blow you out eventually. IBM no longer hires seasoned professionals - they only hire young people under 30, again as a way of cost savings via salary. In GTS if you close a deal it has to go to a War Room internally to see if they have the internal resources to execute. Nobody is happy here. Ginni the CEO is the worst and high level management simply doesn't care - they just protect their piece of the pie while the ongoing layoffs continue.

    Advice to Management

Dear Management - you won't change, you are there to get your bonus and you simply don't care about your people. My advice to management, bring in an outsider for CEO and then clean house at the senior leadership levels in order to save this dying company. 22 straight quarters of declining revenue - outrageous for a Fortune 30 company to not perform.

    Telecommuting policy
    Experienced team

    Cons

    Process slows down selling
Horrible reputation and relationship with most customers
IBM executive managers make draconian decisions and panic
    Poor financial results
    Managed by finance
    Poor work life balance
    Capped when greatly over achieving

    Advice to Management

Find a visionary to lead the company

I have been working at IBM full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

World class products, very good managers, very smart people and superior brand recognition. Whatever I sell to a Client is an excellent product or service.

    Cons

Endless huge layoffs, morale is gone, the company is cheap - they do not care about their employees and are running scared in the market.

    Advice to Management

Management does not speak to the front line sales guys - they sit in their ivory tower tying to enhance their own spreadsheet to hit their number. Clients provide revenue, clients drive profit. Quit trying to focus on Wall Street and start focusing on the needs of the client.

    Pros

Trying to change. Nice people. Supportive environment. Amazing products and great vision. A company that actively tries to change the world for the better.

    Cons

Disorganised. Lack of budget to support strategic direction. Really stupid annual events like hiring freezes and travel freezes often prevent business.

    Advice to Management

Hire proper solution sellers. Sales teams are highly inefficient.
