I have been working at IBM full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Access to infinite resources to learn, grow, and innovate
    - Excellent retention and work life balance for a Big corp/tech company
    - Excellent parental leave benefits
    - Relatively easy to change teams and move to areas of emerging technologies

    Cons

    - As it's the case for most big companies, if your group or team projects are less exciting and less revenue generating outside of R&D, you won't have a pleasant ride.

    Advice to Management

Encourage cross groups/teams projects. Whether it's client related projects, open source, or research. We have some of the brightest minds in the industry that can be stuck doing repetitive tasks and not using their full potential.

Coachme platform is good, but we need something more project based where people can launch a project and have other employees pitch in. Each employee could have a few hours a month dedicated to such activities. Many great features and products were developed by other companies doing this.

I worked at IBM full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

I learned a lot at IBM / Tivoli. I spent a long time working a Level 2 position working my way up the ladder. I started out with Tivoli Monitoring for OS product and then I moved to Tivoli Monitoring for Databases and then worked on the Tivoli Data Warehouse product toward the end of my career. When IBM outsourced thousands I decided not to let it tear me up and that was a great decision. I began contracting with IBM and continued for many more years. I worked remotely for IBM Global Services for the worlds fortune 500 companies and it gave me insight on how IT and DataCenters work with the worlds largest corporations. Very few still work there that I worked with and most the hires are for interns.

    Cons

Very large corporations can make bad decisions and still survive. Thousands are hired and thousands are laid off. Make sure you go into it with eyes wide open. They buy a company and then chop chop and consolidate. They focus on the stock but it never really seems to go anywhere very fast anymore. Make sure you make your own plan for your career if you jump in.

    Advice to Management

Go back to the days when training was not only encouraged but required. Everyone is a salesman so make sure your employees are trained to be your sales force as well. They need to know about all your products as well as the ones that are about to be released. Never think that a company is too small to deal with. Small companies that you tossed to the side grew up to be billion dollar opportunities that you lost because you never got your foot in the door.
