I worked at IBM full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good IT Job, excellent manager, excellent M-F hours, average benefits compared to what's happened to USA in recent years.

    Cons

This IBM facility likes to pigeon-hole its staff into a position and a department. Transferring to a different department nearly impossible even if you're a stellar employee. This facility runs like an assembly line of data jobs. You will miss out on learning new technologies. You are taught to stay at your dept. for years and do the same thing over and over. Started at 1200 (1300 never attained) employees in 2009 and in recent years almost all jobs were moved over to India. Only less than 300 now work in IA. Have to pay to park your car. No parking. State income tax.

    Advice to Management

My manager was excellent. BOO to senior management for moving jobs to India thus continuing to meltdown of America. IBM moved into Iowa and Missouri and completely lied to them. They then pulled out after 5 or so years. Missouri actually removed the IBMs tax credits for their dishonesty. Iowa was promised 1300 w avg. 45K salaries. What they got was mostly $30K salary employees.

I worked at IBM full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

I met some wonderfully talented people. I did learn a few new programs. Symphony is a terrible program compared to Microsoft.

    Cons

The performance reviews were rigged. You were judged not on your personal achievements but on your "band" (level) on your floor on a bell curve. Just like in college. A couple would get 1s, a few would get 2+s, a lot would get 2s, a few would get 3s, and a couple would get 4s.

Only the 1s & 2+s would get raises and if you got a 3 you were stuck in your position for 18 months. If you got a 4 you were walked out.

Many times your work was not even comparable to the other band members' work but you were judged the same.

    Advice to Management

Explain, manage, communicate! Most managers I had were terrible with explaining the IBM way. I didn't feel challenged, the work was too clerical in nature and I can't believe how much work we sent overseas.

I have been working at IBM full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Lots of opportunities to learn new skills and develop current ones. Learned a lot about the corporate world and contractual commitments.

    Cons

The services division is turbulent. Not sure what the executives are planning but the general feeling among employees is unease towards their future.

    Advice to Management

Too much focus on the commitment to the shareholders. We're going to lose more accounts if we continue to push resources overseas to cut costs.

    Pros

My manager was excellent. My department worked 8-5 M-F only. Benefits were above average and good time off. Dubuque is a small town so you won't have to drive in traffic jams and many of us walked to work. Yes it's Mayberry USA.

    Cons

Very unfriendly people. Awkward silences in elevator every day. This center ran data like an assembly line of cars. Many employees left with not enough skills to get a job since IBM pigeon-holes employees into doing one job. Transfers were almost impossible. Raises were slim. Budgets were cut each year from 2010-2014. Layoffs left my dept. from 25 down to 10. Dubuque IA is a boring town. Iowa has 7 months of cold and many many months of grey skies only. This center is down to 200-300 I hear. IBM shafted Dubuque and Columbia MO. Most of these jobs have gone to India now.
IBM is out to protect its share holders. Doesn't care about it's employees.

    Advice to Management

It's not Management's fault. My manager was excellent.
