I have been working at IBM full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    You can work from home.

    Cons

Lots of procedures, takes a long time to adhere to mandatory procedures that "have to be done"

    Advice to Management

Have more contact with your remote employees

I worked at IBM as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Interesting experience. Excellent colleagues.
Interesting work with challenging timescales. Working with experts in their fields. Wonderful place to live and work.

    Cons

Short term planning , no anticipation of staff requirements and no stretch to accommodate drop in demand.
Worst Onboarding I have ever had to work through.

    Advice to Management

    Plan ahead

I worked at IBM full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Well paid. International travel options. Camaraderie with (same level) colleagues. Terrific technical innovators. Good Senior Management (and by that I mean the Board in the US - not the Country/regional management 'yes' men)

    Cons

Highly political working environment. Managers more interested in their next move than you (or the job at hand for that matter). No management training (other than 'how not to get IBM sued') A need, not only to play the game, but to be SEEN to play the game. You ARE a number (PS mine was 16882 if you're interested)

    Advice to Management

Junior and middle managers - MANAGE your people and not JUST the business!!!! Treat your employees as people rather than 'tools'

I have been working at IBM full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great place to build technical skills and work on a large scale deployments. Lots of initiatives underway and great chance to work with cutting edge offerings

    Cons

Lots of politics, you need know how to play the game and get ahead. Business goals that are often set don't match the day to day job you carry out so can be hard to meet.

    Advice to Management

Listen more to the teams close to the accounts, learn to flex the use of all delivery centres rather than just one.

    Pros

Great brand recognition, great availability of technical resources, many committed staff members who are proud of who they work for

    Cons

Poor compensation compared to the industry. If you are there too long your salary falls behind market average, and the only way to change is to leave. An embaressingly manic focus on expenses
