I have been working at IBM as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

People are generally cool and very professional as well as talented. Your team at IBM never lets you down, so you can promise delivery and they will back you up!

    Cons

IBM has a reputation for laying people off once they are on the bench a bit too long... although it has not happened to me or anyone I know - so in a booming market, not a concern.

This is true for virtually any employer engaged in consulting these days.

    Advice to Management

Just keep doing what you're doing.

I have been working at IBM full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great minds innovative products like Watson and block chain Very hard working delivery teams Has the widest portfolio of products and services and a wide network of delivery centers

    Cons

If you are good you will never grow your skills since you will be on deployments and people on deployments don't get trained Unrealistic timelines making you work more than 60 hrs a week but will be asked to hide your work hours and charge only 40 hrs illegal but you will be asked to do this Partners care two hoots about their team members and feel delivery teams are a lower class In today's world you only get work for delivery Very few partners even know how to deliver it right No synergy between different divisions

    Advice to Management

Pls do not abuse your own people Train people who are capable and not only who are on the bench to tick off some management sheet to show training is done Be cognizant of the fact that people are sincere but do not abuse their sincerity Eventually you will start to loose good people IBM is a great company but it is great because of its workforce Just adding levels of management with highly paid partners is not going to solve issues Stop self gratifying let the customers do the accolades and focus on the customers needs Break down towers of power centers within different divisions

    Pros

Was on many teams and for the most part, they all enabled you to get the job done. Only one account with mostly outsourced resourced did not embrace the IBM way of doing things.

    Cons

Head count reductions don't make sense. Even one star performers are listed. No resources to cover, or foreign resources who cannot tell the difference between hardware or software because they do not have an IT background.

    Advice to Management

Matrixed resources lead to account teams being wiped out. Clients notice when their daily contacts disappear.

I worked at IBM full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

It is hard to come up with any Pros for any of the US based employees of IBM, in the IT sector. Hundreds, if not thousands were laid off in March with 3 month notice and one month severance. And now, more were laid off in May!

    Cons

People in the US are being laid off left and right, while folks are being hired overseas. Wonder how long companies that IBM supports in the US will continue to use IBM services. No room for progress or promotions.

    Advice to Management

Please do not decimate the US middle class. The top executives are cashing in on the stock options while thousands of employees in the US are being laid off, every month. The CEO has her bonuses conveniently linked to Watson and Cloud. Sad to see the slow death of a company.

I worked at IBM (Less than a year)

    Pros

Excellent company to work with and improve the learning curve.

    Cons

Slow progression. Difficulty to move from one specialization to another.

    Advice to Management

Do not get rid of experienced and talented persons just for cost cutting. It will hurt the company in the long run.

    Pros

Fair market value salary. Generally knowledgeable peers. Part time telecommuting for position.
