I worked at IBM full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Really good benefits, very flexible work arrangements (able to work remotely from home office), talented co-workers, well run company

    Cons

the company became too beholden to its silly 'roadmap' it gave to Wall Street and started to become very short-sighted, cut almost all perks to everyone but the sales dept

    Advice to Management

invest in keeping your people happy, don't eliminate employee appreciation programs just to try to make your artificial wall street # for the quarter

I worked at IBM (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Numerous opportunities to continue to learn both through formal training courses as well as job experience. Exposure to large scale projects and foundational knowledge that can be carried throughout a career.

    Cons

Large corporation that makes you feel like a number at times. Very difficult to move within the company as it is very BU focused.

    Advice to Management

Facilitate and enable more cross BU interaction, which would allow for less attrition.

I have been working at IBM full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    Good on resume
    learning technical skills

    Cons

Management is inept. At least in the Gaithersburg, MD BCRS site.
    No raises. Pay cuts.
Resource action to reduce workforce... then hiring for same job Months later. To me it looks like a way to get rid of higher paid skilled workers and replace with lower paid employees.

    Advice to Management

    Stop Lying to employees.
    Treat your employees better.

    Pros

IBM is a large company with lots of different areas so if there is not an immediate fit, there are generally opportunities to find other areas to work in.

    Cons

IBM has over the last several years performed well financially but distributed very low bonus payouts to employees, at least in the US. Additionally, IBM has very aggressively moved as many jobs as possible out of the US to low cost centers, resulting in layoffs every year.

    Advice to Management

Stop looking at the next 3-6 months as the time horizon to manage by. Take the long view and do what's right for the entire IBM community - to include the US population of employees.

    Pros

There is practically an unlimited amount of trianing opportunity here. The ability to switch groups / careers is also a definite plus. The IBM name carries with it quite a bit of prestige. Ability to innovate and be creative is superb here.

    Cons

Getting a promotion beyond a certain point requires an extreme amount of documentation and can take much longer than needed if you hapeen to accomplish goals outside of their career framework timeframe. This is a profit center, and management is not timid about expressing this. They lay off folks pretty much every quarter, but also do quite a bit of hiring. Stock price is the largest driver in this company. Innovation is a distant second.

    Advice to Management

Let's pass more of the money down beyond the executives. These 1-3% per annum raises are ridiculous. Bonuses could be better as well.

    Pros

IBM Brand is second to none. Competitive benefits package. Opportunities to learn new technologies. Collaberation with telented members of cross-functional teams.

    Cons

Senior managment out of touch with employees; something is wrong if you need annual surveys to understand your teams. Reorganization every two years, for reasons not always clearly articulated by management. Individual performance not always recognized by management unless you are a shameless self-promoter.

    Advice to Management

Get out of the tower, and interact directly with employees

    Pros

Unlimited resources for information in order to self-learn multiple IT disciplines. Still carries prestige with others. Many employees are spectacular and top achievers.

    Cons

In practice, workloads kept increasing as downsizings were common. Came to be where employees were working around the clock in global environments. Acquiring a sweatshop atmosphere with small or nonexistant salary increases for the general population. New management by fear, intimidation and bullying style becoming prevalent.

    Advice to Management

Stop doing everything just for immediate stock price increase. Treat your employees as humans and invest in them. Go back to your core values in practice, not just as a collection of catchy phrases.

    Pros

IBM is an Innovative company with lots of inventions and technologies that will further its product portfolio. There are huge opportunities for advancement given such a huge company.

    Cons

Downside include offshoring, spending freezes and not enough skilled people on the accounts.

    Advice to Management

Management needs to fully review and understand the ramifications of their LEAN, offshoring, staff reduction, education-freezing and expense-reduction initiatives.
