I have been working at IBM full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

As a research assistant, I was frequently given free reign to try new technologies and see how they might be applied to real world application. It can be exciting to take something new from the lab and actually oversee implementation as a pilot in a customer setting and be able to take the feedback directly back to the lab in a continuous improvement cycle.

    Cons

It was a temporary assignment and had to come to an end.

    Advice to Management

Sometimes older employees are worth keeping around. They have much knowledge they can impart to the new kids on the block. Many of them are not dated with antiquated skills as many think, but stay abreast of the latest technology and can see value and application of new technology.

    I worked at IBM

    Pros

Not very stressful. Easy to get time off for university, or family reasons. Rarely did management demand performance (which is also a con).

    Cons

No structure, had no oversight, and wasn't able to grow. Both my direct manager and second manager moved to Google and was left with no actual manager to review my work and assign tasks.

    Advice to Management

Need more oversight. This might have been specific for the research project I was working on, but it was extremely unorganized.

    Pros

+ Freedom to pick research problem + Supportive team members + Great peers and well-known researchers + Encouragement and support to publish summer's work. IBM even pays for all your conference-related expenses. + Relocation assistance as well as stipend for covering living expenses for the duration of the internship.

    Cons

    - Average employee age is rather high leading to an atmosphere that feels old. - Limited food options at cafeteria

    I worked at IBM

    Pros

When times are good you can end up working on some of the most exciting and innovative stuff. There are some really brilliant people at Watson research today.

    Cons

Research is now much more focused on funding than on innovation, with the result being that more and more focus is put on coming up with ways to make the current product portfolio stronger. This is difficult, especially when you consider that the typical Research Staff Member is a Ph. D. with little practical knowledge of how the products are used, and with little to no access to customer feedback. This results in... projects that are irrelevant to the product line or are redundant to work being done already by the product staff. If you are not working on a project like this but something disruptive you often have to sell it to the people who are being disrupted (called "finding a catcher"); oftentimes these people are so vested in the current product that they may spend their efforts killing your work rather than embracing it.

    Advice to Management

Get back to your roots. Find ways to encourage speculative research. The importance of research is to come up with the next game changers, not to improve the current product line. It's not IBM Advanced Technology, it's IBM Research!

    I worked at IBM

    Pros

Nice colleagues, a lot of seminars, talks, internal exhibitions to further improve your professional knowledge, great place to exchange ideas with colleagues

    Cons

Facilities are a bit old. Location was far from the city and takes a lot of travel time. Lack of lunch options.

    Advice to Management

Continue with the fun and friendly culture Improve the facilities of the working place Communicate more about company goals and directions

I have been working at IBM

    Pros

Work with some of the most talented people in the scientific research community. Great place for research -- good balance between academic and industrial research. Opportunities to work on some cutting-edge research projects. Encourage publishing in conferences/journals and development as a scientist. Pay well compared with other companies for a similar position.

    Cons

Too much bureaucracy, and too much paperwork for everything. Despite the high stock value for IBM, none of that seems to make it to the employees. Hiring freezes and restrictions on travel spending every so often -- higher ups don't seem to be managing the budget very well.

    Advice to Management

Get the company finances in order fast, make decisions keeping a long-term perspective of things, and provide incentives/rewards for employees that impact IBM bottom-line.
