I worked at IBM as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Learn at your own pace. Take on as much work as you would like.
IBM always an easy connection to any and all employees/co-workers. So I recommend utilizing this resource and you will have endless opportunity.
A broad overview of the federal division.
You don't feel like an intern.

    Cons

    Independent atmosphere.
You must have high adaptability and learn quickly. (Pro for me, maybe con for others)
A lot of department works from home so you really only communicate through email/messaging platform. Which can be tough at times. I like to collaborate in person for the most part.

    No opinion of CEO

I worked at IBM full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great people and a generally cooperative and collaborative environment within the consulting organizations

    Cons

Poor interaction across divisions. For example, the Software Group does not collaborate will with Global Business Services (the consulting organization), and I often found that the two groups were working at cross purposes within the same client organization

    Advice to Management

Need to realign incentives to drive more cross-organization collaboration.

    Pros

If you have a love for technology, there's a lot going on at IBM at all times. Easy to build relationships with cross-functional team members. And the breadth of knowledge one can gain is limitless. Lots of opportunity to learn from customer engagements, stay on top of industries, good insight from research organizations like Garter, IBV, IDC, Forrester.

    Cons

Some of the pros can turn into a con as well. Quest for knowledge can sometimes be overwhelming and take away focus on what you want to achieve in your career.

    Advice to Management

Keep talent and help them grow

    Pros

Large firm with numerous career tracks within and between business units. One has to own his or her career at IBM, it's a very big place and critical to keep focus on what one is trying to achieve.

    Cons

IBM is a public firm, the quarterly wall street demands require heightened focus on reporting and financial data.

    Advice to Management

Continue cultivating the type of leaders Ginni is grooming. The old management mentality should become obsolete and those managers as well.

I worked at IBM full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

It proved me opportunities to grow and develop my career. I had some fantastic managers (and some not so great) who supported me and were truly my advisors. The corporate culture and values were aligned with mine. You are in control of your career but the downside is that you have to take control.

    Cons

In the 7 years I was at IBM, I had 9 different managers which meant that I needed to establish the relationship over and over. It is easy to be stove-piped into a role and can be difficult to move into a new career path. However, if you are persistent and willing to do the work to make it happen, you can make it happen,

    Advice to Management

Abandon the "up or out." You are losing some great employees who are comfortable at the level they are and are not looking for promotion.

I worked at IBM full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Innovative technology and smart people. Flexible working environment with resources to support telework. There are not many pros I can come up with unfortunately.

    Cons

Toxic environment with continual lay offs the call resource actions. Lack of effective leadership and terrible management. No growth opportunity or support of employees career aspirations. Focused on cost cutting by eliminating senior high cost employees with low cost millennials. CEO takes huge bonuses while employees are being cut each month.

    Advice to Management

Focus on supporting employees that results in growth dedication.

    Pros

People are great, benefits are good, salary is fair for role/responsibility. Access to emerging technologies with IBM is easily accessible and plenty of online training capabilities to drive your career path

    Cons

Large company, managers are only available when something is needed from you, sink or swim mentality, hard to exit a project for other IBM opportunities. Difficult to truly understand where you fit in with the larger IBM picture.
