I have been working at IBM full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Great values and great vision. The strategy designed for IBM's business growth and culture change is right on point with the needs of the new and changing environment. The management tend not to evaluate you based on hours, but impact and results - and they are advised to also evaluate how you achieve these results (you must live the values).

    Cons

Our leaders do not do what they preach! IBM lives a constant dichotomy between what we know we need to do and what we're used to do and know the results that come from it. It's natural for any company going through such a big change, but most of the leaders are the ones not acting as the IBMers of the future and still pressuring their team to do the same so they can stay in their comfort zone - this is making a lot of...

    Advice to Management

There's a lot of talk about people refreshment, but are we targeting all the population needed? I feel that we're not being hard enough on our leaders when it comes to behavior - we talk about it, but at the end, we're really just measuring them based on numbers. If they don't change, we won't move forward

I have been working at IBM full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    - Incredible Technology - Deep client relationships - Flexible work environment - Smart, culturally intelligent colleagues - Worldwide / Global Scope - Change-accepting Culture

    Cons

    - Deeply entrenched hierarchical structure - 380,000+ employees, difficult to stand out - workaholic culture - slow to embrace industry shifts in recent years - consistently cutting benefits and perks for employees year after year

    Advice to Management

    - work diligently to "flatten" bits of the organization - reward your best employees appropriately (the competition for talent will only become tougher in the future, retention of top talent is of the utmost important) - continue building out the Watson portfolio to enter new markets where AI could make significant improvements and contributions - find a way to get back into the minds of everyday consumers

I have been working at IBM full-time for more than 19 years

    Pros

Vast, raw, untapped opportunities abound for your needs for exposure, self-satisfaction, personal validation, professional breadth and depth of expertise and experiences, and conditioning to not only boring-old direct reporting relationships, but REAL and top-quality matrix reporting relationships. You can be happy here in 3 ways: personally, professionally and organizationally, and you can do this if you approach IBM...

Do not come here if you think you're going to be led in to everything you need. Do not come here if you have no idea what you need. Seriously, I'm not kidding, GO TO THERAPY before or shortly after coming to IBM to understand what are your personal needs--like REALLY your personal needs: are you an introvert, an extrovert, a go-getter, a centrist, a self-deceiver, a self-validator, needy, self-aggrandizing, narcissistic,...

    Advice to Management

Embrace the fact that the IBM brand is OWNED BY THE EMPLOYEES, and stop messing it up. Go to Basic Blue, now called Leadership Academy, and make the assumption that your employees are only engaged and motivated when you actually do the stuff that is taught by management development.

    Cons

The company is a bit affected by the impact of global & western recession.

    Advice to Management

I have been working at IBM (Less than a year)

    Pros

Good culture, supportive managers, flexible work (home office), possibility to develop in the aria you want, a lot of training material available online, you can constantly learn, traveling and working on global projects, find out about the jobs you didn't know they existed

    Cons

Difficult to get promoted despite doing jobs that are above you current band and salary, it can take years, bad compensation comparing to other similar companies, a lot of process restrictions, some middle management is really old school management type

    Advice to Management

Some managers are really great, supportive and coach and lead you, still there are some who don't act according with values, don't share knowledge and information are more focused on their own carrier and therefore not willing to push ideas, initiatives or for example someones promotion. They never object or question decisions from their manages and blindly follow in order to be promoted.... this applies more to the...

I have been working at IBM (Less than a year)

    Pros

    1) Global culture which enables you to communicate with IBMers all over the world; 2) Work full of challenge which makes you feel you are learning; 3) Various tools for IBMers to use; 4) Be ahead of the world in IT technology; 5) Flexible work time and place;

    Cons

1)It's too big to navigate, easy to be lost in the blue sea; 2)Too much information to absorb; 3) Sometimes global collaboration cause low efficiency.

    Advice to Management

    1) Treats interns better, especially those want to stay in IBM and contribute. This could help build the brand of IBM for recruiting new graduates. 2)Better performance appraisal system and incentive plan, not only focus on sales.
