I worked at IBM full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Vast world wide network of brilliant colleagues. Most of the people are super helpful and are there to make a difference. The compensation is competitive and there's a wide variety of assignments you can explore over the course of your career. There are still some great managers at the company.

    Cons

The executive management style is increasingly coercive and toxic. Flawed architectural assumptions and unrealistic business case expectations, by narcissistic senior executives, drives insane employee workloads, and contributes to a depressing high stress work environment. There is a growing tendency towards micromanagement. Too many budgetary allocation decisions are made by financial people instead of those responsible to get things done.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of over controlling narcissistic senior executives. Encourage collaborative and caring executive styles. The culture of an organization starts at the top. I was blessed to have worked for some phenomenal people at IBM, but those types of managers are becoming scarce in the company. Focus less on messaging about great company values and more on actually demonstrating them.

    Pros

Compensation and the name. The benefits are okay but the bonus is horrible. A lot less travel than normal firms

    Cons

Horrible project management. Inability to relate to clients. Lack of coordination across the practice. Ibm still uses lotus notes for email and other custom developed software solutions which make your work life suck

    Advice to Management

Have a longer term vision than end of month utilization.

I have been working at IBM full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Teams that I work with in Poughkeepsie are the most supportive of any of my previous employments. They are willing to take the time to lend a hand even if it means they will have to take time later in the day to catch up on work missed when helping me. They have so many opportunities to help the community that I am involved in: P-Tech, BRGs, eWeek, etc. I think it's a very family oriented place, having been hired recently, it is warm and welcoming. Also, they are very flexible with working from home. I've had the opportunity to travel around the globe about 4 times in only 2 years working here. Management gives good feedback and there are so many different areas to work in - it's mind boggling!

    Cons

It's a global company so naturally you will have people working 24/7 trying to make it work. Also, there are not enough new hires to compensate for retention problems (my generation does not like to stay in one place for long and the turnover is normal but they need to hire more to make it worth while). Also, not everyone loves the hudson valley (I do, but just know that this is NOT NYC)
