I have been working at IBM full-time for more than 4 years

    Pros

Good salary. Very talented people in the trenches. Lots of skills development opportunities . Good work/life balance. Extremely ethical company.

    Cons

The highest executive leadership doesn't know where this company is going. They seem to grab onto the latest hot technology, but then fail to execute as well as Microsoft, AWS or Google. Mid-level management just adds bureaucracy not value, and doesn't build great products. Company keeps re-organizing on a yearly basis wasting resources and stressing out the workforce. Benefits are sub-par.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of some levels of bureaucracy. Do a better job of identifying internal talent and give them more authority.

I have been working at IBM full-time for more than 4 years

    Pros

I am surrounded by good people who know how to deliver high quality software. The salary seems higher than most others in the area, with a fair amount of vacation, if you include floating holidays.

    Cons

Those same people who know how to deliver software are hindered by terrible processes and decision making, some of the worst management I've experienced in more than 20 years of working in this industry. They will definitely lay off huge swaths of people at the drop of a hat. Considering that they don't seem to have much mastery in developing worthwhile products, you would be well-served by keeping some money liquid in...

    Advice to Management

Focus on meeting customer needs, not on technology. Focus on building the capabilities of your employees and teams, not on praising nights and weekends spent delivering low quality products. Learn from the talented external people you hire. Those who haven't lived their entire professional lives at IBM have no good career options. Make "the right way" easy. Focus on quality. Don't sell based on arbitrary...

I worked at IBM full-time for more than 2 years

    Pros

Many very talented people that manage to get the work done.

    Cons

Management does not seem to have a grasp of compliance and the company direction re Compliance changes way to often

    Advice to Management

Figure out what Compliance area is needed and support that effort for more than ten minutes.

I worked at IBM full-time for more than 4 years

    Pros

    - Great brand recognition for resume after IBM - Exposure to high profile clients with opportunities to learn and grow fast - Well-defined career ladder with clear expectations

    Cons

    - Limited interaction with direct manager and staffing manager leads to conflict in the battle between billable hours and project preferences/expertise - Tough work/life balance with a lot of travel - Senior management is far out of touch from what's actually happening with clients on the day-to-day

  10. "Good company going through transition"

    StarStarStarStarStar
      Current Employee - Manager

I have been working at IBM full-time for more than 9 years

      Pros

Definitely a global company. has footprints all over the globe. Solid in-house training programs if you want to cross train across industries or technologies.

      Cons

Toxic environment. Non-deserving people are promoted. You do not have a feeling or sense of security, growth or as a part of the family.

      Advice to Management

Management really needs to look at middle-level management. Especially AP, so many of them either have no clue or are totally obsolete.
