I worked at IBM as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

IBM takes great pride in their employees. There were multiple talks given about how employees made a difference to the company and the current course of the company. My manager was incredibly open and met with me weekly to make sure my work was going well and that I was having a good experience. At times it was a little difficult to learn all the different tools i used, but there was plenty of documentation and the people were incredibly helpful.

    Cons

The work space was very secluded. I often felt very cut off from the outside world, but I think that's just because of how the buildings were made.

    Advice to Management

I would advise management to try to have a few more department events when time permits, just to create a closer connected group.

I worked at IBM full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Challenging work, always keep you very busy, they have a flexible schedule were your schedule is only required to overlap "core" time.

    Cons

Appraisal mechanism based on percentages and peer competition causes frequent "back stabbing" and restricts cooperation, micro management reduces desire to be creative and proactive

    Advice to Management

The company needs to work together to achieve more instead of continuous competition between groups due to fear. Groups don't work well together because everyone is afraid of getting cut.

    Pros

Very easy to work remote. Work life balance is very good. If your not in the US market you could be in a growing division.

    Cons

Poor work atmosphere. Constant resource actions. Management heavy. 17 straight quarters with revenues drop.

I worked at IBM as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

I really appreciated how understanding the company is about personal life. The people I worked with were very enjoyable to work with.

    Cons

It is not completely clear where the company is heading. They are definitely putting more of their money in software. I worked in hardware, and they say that they are going to continue to support this, but who knows how long. The Rochester site could also be updated to be more competitive and up to date compared to other leading tech companies.

    Pros

Different problems everyday so it stays interesting , lots of flexibility .

    Cons

Level 2 support is over seas and very hard to understand and seems like they just follow a script. Pay increases are few and far between .

    Advice to Management

Need to stay in the hardware business. Need to be able to understand our support when we need help

I have been working at IBM full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    -Management style is not overbearing
    -Plenty of opportunity
-Easy to learn entry level jobs
    -Benefits are great
    -Relaxed office atmosphere
    -Global opportunities

    Cons

-Locations of office (Not exactly in hot spots to live)
-Starting salary's are lower than other companies (They aren't horrible though)
-Entry Level jobs can give feelings of being unfullfilled. They don't always require a lot of critical thinking, but instead more of push the paper forward work.

    Advice to Management

The only things I wish could change, which is not easy, are the locations of operations within the US. You just aren't located in the cities I want live in/by at the moment.

I worked at IBM full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good salary, work life balance, and still quite a few good people working there.

    Cons

    - Layoff rumors are constant, and come to fruition at least annually.
    - Benefits cost more and provide less every year.
    - All decisions based on quarterly finances
    - As pieces of the business are bought and sold, corporate identity is unclear

    Advice to Management

Focus on quality of the product/service, and taking care of your people. Quit being penny wise and dollar foolish

I have been working at IBM (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Wide variety of career options and a great collection of employees willing to help and focused on the customer.

    Cons

Too much focus on cost cutting, not enough investment in the future. There are too many layers of management.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees. Focus on what the customers need, not the shareholders. It's the customers that pay the bills, not the shareholders.

    Pros

Great coworkers as long as you wanted to work. and not advance quickly.

    Cons

Corporate culture in that you were useful if you went along with everything regardless of being appreciated.

    Advice to Management

Be more human and not autobots.
