I have been working at IBM full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

There are some very talented people at IBM,.

    Cons

Unfortunately it appears that due to Resource Actions, a majority of the talented people are culled out every quarter, leaving nothing but an empty shell.

Also on hire they promise high bonuses but in reality you will see 1% regardless of how you are rated. It appears that Ginny getting 14.5 million Bonus despite loosing sales quarters 20+ quarters is not enough to hinder this behavior.

    Advice to Management

You were built based on talented individuals. Your Resource Action policy only elicits negative reinforcement quarter after quarter.

I have been working at IBM full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

This is a really good company to work for especially if you are starting out. The benefits are good and salary may start low, but wait a little and it will bounce up really high

    Cons

They lay off a lot of people. Always worried about being laid off. No job security.

I have been working at IBM full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Continually re-invents itself to stay relevant to changing times. IBM is 'World Issue' relevant, not just a technology services company - focusing on solving issues such as curing diseases, ensuring that expertise in areas such as healthcare, law, finance is available to ALL, no matter where you live or your socio-economic limitations, etc. IBM has had a focus on equal pay and diversity since long before it became a focus for other organizations. Career development opportunities are second to none, the internal movement of staff to new roles is a constant focus

    Cons

Sometimes it can be a little bureaucratic and overly 'matrixed' - but with 400,000+ staff its difficult not to have some of that..........pay/benefits are good but not industry leading - real motivation to join comes from the career opportunity presented, the chance for personal and professional growth once in IBM and the thrill of working for an industry leading brand which is taking Watson to the world.

    Advice to Management

Be a little more willing to take risks and empower your good people - don't get bogged down in process

    Advice to Management

No progression means you will be left with the followers not the leaders

I have been working at IBM full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

-So much diversity of thought, talent and innovation
-Ability to 'change' careers while staying in the same company. There are so many opportunities throughout IBM that mobility is easy versus having to leave the company to change your job.
-Flexibility - where you work; how you work; when you work (within reason)
-Good maternity / paternity program and easy reentry to work

    Cons

-Priorities / strategies can change very quickly and you can be impacted
-Expected to be 'on' almost always

    Advice to Management

-When we say our people are the priority - mean it
-Encourage time for education/classes/etc - there is so much great material to take advantage of
-Use the feedback you are given

I worked at IBM full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

-Get exposed to a lot of different elements of business right away
-Lots of different people to learn from
-Opportunities to get into new fields with little experience

    Cons

    -No Career path clarity
    -Poor managers giving little guidance
    -Undervalue their employees
-Consistently misuse talent for shortsighted goals without considering the long run
-The company is still trying to reinvent themselves

    Advice to Management

Work with new talent more closely, value new ideas, and actively advocate for new talent to give opportunities to grow and thrive from. IBM has the potential to be a fantastic company, but it continuously gets in its own way and top talent decides to leave within 2-4 years.
