I worked at IBM full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

IBM pays a good base salary. Medical coverage especially for prescriptions is excellent.

    Cons

    No long term structure
Sales plans are changed every half. What you sell changes, who you sell to changes.
They have a calculation that they use to determine if you are succeeding in sales or not. What it doesn't take into account is that there is a 12-18 month sales cycle. When your territory and clients change every 6 months... and it takes two months to get the details to you... you are expected to achieve in 4 mo what it takes 18 to do. The only way you luck out is if previous sales reps have gotten something to the finish line and you capitalize on it. Their calculation for what it looks like to "succeed and have the necessary skills" changes as well. So you never know in six months if you'll have a job or not.

    Advice to Management

Leave things alone. Stop messing with the structure. Let your sales reps actually take care of your clients. Stop treating people like they are indispensable as you get the numbers where you can without calling it a RIF and instead telling the sales teams they just aren't talented.

    Advice to Management

    Pros

    Salary and benefits are competitive
People I worked with were some of the best
Lots of interesting and challenging work

    Cons

Company always trying to streamline work and become more efficient, this always resulted in more work with less people and longer hours.
A lot of hard work put into standardizing processes which results into easy migration of the work overseas.

    Advice to Management

Try being more considerate to your employees your have instead of the bottom dollar. I feel this strategy of landing IT support contracts, streamlining then outsourcing overseas will backfire. I am see more and more companies now moving there support back to the US where it belongs.

    Pros

Great benefits, opportunities to work on newer technologies if you're in the right position or are able to spend time outside of normal work hours to contribute to some other project.

    Cons

The biggest con is the constant layoffs to boost stock price. Out of all the people I know that got "surplused", only one got a position elsewhere in the company. What more can I say?

    Advice to Management

There is too much reliance on bureacracy when it comes to things like skill evaluations and whatnot that waste valuable working time.
