I have been working at IBM (More than 10 years)

    Pros

IBM is a globally respected company and one of the few companies capable of handling the IT requirements of the world's largest and most complex enterprises. IBM is also a leader in the latest technology advances related to cloud, analytics, data, mobile, and AI. Many IBMers work remotely, and the company rates highly as an equal opportunity employer

    Cons

IBM jobs in the US are drying up. Cost pressures and are driving job opportunities overseas. IBM is forced to treat US employees as costs they would get rid of if they could. This is especially true in Technology Services and Strategic Outsourcing.

    Advice to Management

Long time, loyal employees understand business realities but still they deserve some loyalty and recognition for their efforts on your part, even if you must let them go.

I worked at IBM full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

If you can handle changing jobs and managers every other year, you made make it. A company can only re-shape and re-invent itself so many times.

    Cons

IBM always talks about how they think their people are the best, but the way they treat them is a different story.

    Advice to Management

Start listing! Stop just looking at the spread sheet. Change the pricing so our clients start looking at IBM as a value partner vs a vendor just trying to sell its software.

I worked at IBM as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

Excellent management and communication practices; for the most part very equitable treatment of contract personnel. The exception is influenced primarily by the career path of IBM Personnel, as opposed to the career path of Contract Personnel. Opportunity does exist to convert to a permanent IBM Personnel position, if this path is an offered consideration. IBM harnesses a good hierarchical structure of responsibilities and adheres to uniformed methodology to deliver support and services.

    Cons

As with any or all contract positions, a glass ceiling exists, which delimits boundaries between contractor and employees of IBM, although blurred. This fine line is a line of career longevity; albeit an understandable preset boundary. Limited access to IBM Reference and Training resources.

    Advice to Management

IBM Managers when building and maintaining Team relationships include their contract personnel, offer feedback, and include them in all in=house personnel activities. Provide or promote the same opportunities to enhance or develop on the job skills.

    Pros

Everybody knows who IBM is. They have a good brand.
They have allot of smart people, especially in the engineering departments
It's easy to get appointments with clients and prospects
You have the option of working from home

    Cons

They do not pay well compared to other companies
It seems like good people are always getting laid off
The sales plan is way to complicated
    There are to many managers
    The internal systems are terrible

    Advice to Management

The days of 70%+ margin on hardware are long gone

  9. "IBM India - Company is too big to value employees. HR policies are not employee friendly."

I have been working at IBM full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Brand name. Larger pool of projects

    Cons

Unfriendly HR policies. Promotions are really slow and based on politics and not on performance. No salary hike when onshore. Frequent manager changes. Unfair appraisal and ratings.

    Advice to Management

Give more value to employees and look at promotions seriously. Divert the time and energy spent on trying to avoid giving promotions and use it towards better HR management. Remove HR function from managers and reallocate to people who are trained in HR functions. Manager is too powerful in this organisation and this had led to widespread corruption and blatant violations of BCG's by managers. BCG should not be applicable only to junior and senior engineers. Managers should be held in check.

    Pros

    Cons

Terrible People Management. Virtually all jobs are moving off-shore. Sweatshop atmosphere.

    Advice to Management

Spend some time focused on the people and not the bottom line. There is a direct correlation.
