I worked at IBM full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Not many pros to share. After fighting for 2 years I was given a sizable raise before I left.

    Cons

Being acquired by IBM was not a pleasant experience. We were lost in the shuffle. I have since left the company, but in the last 2 years MANY of my co-workers have been let go and the products we/they supported are being redone and absorbed into existing IBM programs. The way it was all done was very disheartening, but I guess this is how a big company that acquires many small companies stays relevant.

    Advice to Management

Don't forget there are real people working for you and not just machines.

I have been working at IBM full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

So much flexibility knowing IBM is located in all major cities. I also get work remote often with is so nice when i want to visit family or friends. I can still work from other cities.

    Cons

Working at a company as massive as IBM can sometimes make a person feel like they are just a #. Not the most personal experice

    Advice to Management

Invest in your your younger talent. we need great junior, mid level, and senior employees. Sometimes it feels like we have great juniors, and seniors, but the mid level is lacking.

I have been working at IBM (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Truly good people who care about IBM and each other
Smart, smart, smart people -- leading thinkers in so many areas; you can truly find an expert and learn about nearly any topic you can think of
Good work -- lots of opportunity to be part of changing a large company in a volatile and complex industry
I've been very lucky to have many really good managers in my time here
    Opportunities to do different things

    Cons

High-risk of job loss as employment levels and skill needs change; and pitiful severance
A few senior leaders who may mean well but may benefit from more new blood in the org
Hard to change a big complex global org; they're on the path, but change is hard and slow

    Advice to Management

Get beyond the excessively cost-focus; this quarterly view of the world limits progress in key actions that are needed to drive the strategy
Be more selective about what to change and provide the resources to really make it happen
Take better care of the employees you have or need to let go of for no other reason than business demand

    Pros

Requires your best effort and then some. Constant demand for new skills which is fine with me. Many talented folks to work with.

    Cons

Tough to get real promotion but it is typical for the large company. Some folks are very territorial. Innovation is slower than desired.

    Advice to Management

    Keep the current approach.

    Pros

Large company with a lot of resources and opportunities available. Free training, networking, and events for those who seek those out.

    Cons

Hard to find a mentor and someone who will guide you through the sea of bureaucracy and complexity. There are man opportunities and routes to advancement, but it's hard to discern which one to take.

    Advice to Management

Match mentors with mentees on a more personal level. It is important that they maintain face-to-face contact and create a bond between the two of them.
