I have been working at IBM full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

I work with unmatched researchers and engineers that are solving for problems others haven't anticipated yet. In security specifically I have the highest level of confidence about the primary problem we are addressing and that no other provider can even check more than two of the five boxes needed except IBM and that's because of what they decided to do 12 years ago. Our CEO is leading the the most daunting change of...

    Cons

If you're looking for a place to settle in and not be challenged on a daily basis this would be a bad choice. There's still some complexity with an organization the size of IBM. And some people who protect and hold onto processes or principles of the past on how things 'ought' to be done as if their written in stone convictions, but their either adapting or moving on. Realizing there's a difference between convictions...

    Advice to Management

Rethink the layers and level of trust. If you hire someone to coach and manage a field team then you have to trust their inputs on numbers and needs. The fewer people between them and you the easier it is to move and win. If it's a matter of fielding all the questions, request for approvals, clarifying expectations, etc... then have a couple people that support you in those areas but not as layers between you and the...

    Pros

Good to learn as the management isn't equipped to handle teams. So you learn on your own, unless you are a complete butts.

    Cons

Management, as always. Most managers are not professional, most don know whats what in their projects.

    Advice to Management

Suck it up and learn what goes in your project. Learn to give respect to earn it back.

I worked at IBM full-time for more than 19 years

    Pros

IBM really has what they are doing "down pat". For a big company I was always impressed by how smoothly their internal systems worked and that they really tried to help employees when they needed it.

    Cons

In order to advance in the company managers have to work in all different parts of the business so they can understand them. This means you will get short-term managers popping in on a regular basis who don't understand the part of the business YOU are in so they can learn. Some of these are good, some not so good.

    Advice to Management

Consider a model where someone can advance without having to "travel the globe", not everyone wants to be stuck at a low level if they don't want to move to different areas.
