I worked at IBM full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Pay and benefits, depth of knowledge from peers to help you out

    Cons

lay-offs until they get the numbers they want in US

    Advice to Management

Years of lay-offs have damaged the IBM name. Few people want to work there. Respect for the individual is gone. Along with a lot of good people.

I have been working at IBM full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

IBM Research is the best place to work in IBM:
     - Interesting and difficult problems to solve
     - Highly intelligent coworkers, expert in a wide range of fields
     - Chance to influence the future of the company
     - Connected to industry and academia
     - Offices! (Researchers need places to hunker down and concentrate)

    Cons

IBM is very bureaucratic and seems set on saving money by cutting everywhere they can, often to the detriment of employees and their morale. IBM Research is only partially exempted from these problems.

    Advice to Management

Invest in your employees and their welfare and you'll be repaid 10x. IBM lives and dies on its reputation in the business community, and we have to invest in our workers to deliver the highest quality to our clients.

    I worked at IBM full-time

    Pros

interesting work, bright colleagues, reasonable pay, good benefits

    Cons

Chaotic strategy, very little transparency from management, systematic headcount reduction of older workers (everybody over age 50 is looking over the shoulder), crazy work schedules to accommodate working with people on the other side of the globe

    Advice to Management

Layoffs every month or every quarter demoralize the employees, the result being stressed workers and no company loyalty.

I worked at IBM (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Worked with some incredible team members and customers.

    Cons

Cloud strategy was late. Constant re-organizations, but fail to consider how the customer would like to do business with IBM.

    Advice to Management

    Remember Eastman Kodak

I worked at IBM full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    - Big budgets when the company decides to hire
    - Career growth opportunities
    - (Eventually) competitive salaries

    Cons

    - All the bureaucracy of government
    - Lags behind industry technology
    - Lags behind industry engineering practices and culture

    Advice to Management

High level management at IBM is rife with people who are basically career politicians. Giving them advice is like trying to give advice to your senator.

I worked at IBM full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The benefits and pay are great.

    Cons

Layoffs are CONSTANT! They cycle people in and out at astonishing quantities.

    Advice to Management

Last year, IBM hired and fired 70,000 employees including aquisitions like me. It will likely be similar this year. The efforts made to place individuals in other positions instead of laying them off are for appearance only. Come up with an incentive for mgrs to hire current employees before laying them off. Imagine the hours of training that were paid to those 70,000 people that were both fired and hired...140.000 people went through the required hours and hours of training that take place in the first few months of employment. I can't image how they throw that kind of money away yearly with no thought.

    I worked at IBM full-time

    Pros

good leadership and good processes that were brought in from pwc and other consulting organizations. Solid technical resources with experience and expertise in the senior positions

    Cons

the new hiring was terrible, bringing in lower cost employees may provide short term money but in the long term it lead to a lot of delivery issues

    Advice to Management

Improve your hiring processes. Hire more talented people and retain them. You'll never be the lowest cost provider but you can be the best value for money.

I have been working at IBM full-time

    Pros

Can work from home and there are plenty of areas you can choose to work in. There is so much access to tools that you can learn and grow from.

    Cons

Benefits are okay but not what they use to be. Different divisions of the company have different benefits.

    Advice to Management

Promote the people that do a good job , reward them and give them the raise they deserve... good people wont stay

    Pros

IBM could be good again but there have have been so many job cuts globally. A lot of people are out of jobs now and we need more people amd help!

    Cons

Need more CEs. We have about half our team left. It is very difficult to manage work-life balance when we are each doing the work of 2 employees.
