I have been working at IBM full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

IBM is making impressive strides towards being a progressive company especially being the behemoth they are. IBM now has 12 weeks paternity leave for new fathers and even more for new mothers. IBM has a large remote workforce that promotes flexibility and a better work-life balance. IBM provides excellent opportunities to give back such as the PTECH mentoring program where we partner with a local highschool and mentor these students.

GBS is finally beginning to focus on the employee. They created a "consultant college" which is a week long training for all levels in the organization called Bee School. It's nice to see IBM emphasizing employee growth and empowerment.

    Cons

IBM IS HUGE! Depending on what group you are a part of, it's very easy to get stuck in a bubble where you do not interact with anyone outside of your direct practicing area. Too much focus on utilization, but that's a tough fix since it ties directly to revenue.

    Advice to Management

The growth mindset needs to be had at every level of the organization. It can't just come from an executive and then some of the practitioners. It needs to be a focus for the entire company from practitioner, to your direct manager, and up the chain. Only then will we begin to see real a positive change in the culture with a focus employee empowerment and growth.

    Pros

    Diversity of challenges to solve
amazing colleagues - some of the smartest people I’ve ever met are IBMers. I love the people I work with
    Geographic reach

    Cons

Upper level management out of touch with customer and employee needs and too entrenched in legacy, cumbersome business processes. Incentive systems based on previous org siloes that can make it feel impossible to collaborate across business units for the benefit of customers. Mixed messages on purpose: shareholders vs customers vs employees vs society. Despite a female CEO still limited women at the top and no visible effort to nurture the next gen of female execs.

    Advice to Management

A general manager told me early in my career “A good leader helps or gets out of the way.” More GMs should heed his advice. To employees, making positive change is always an uphill battle. We should be making it easier for “wild ducks” to do good work vs exhausting them to the point of leaving.

I have been working at IBM full-time

    Pros

    Great 401K match at 6%

    Cons

Health Insurance out of pocket continues to rise while raises fall off - even for seasoned employees with exceptional performance. 401K match is only paid at the end of the year to make sure no one leaves while they wait on there 'potential' raises.

    Advice to Management

Stop deciding on what year you will give your employees raises. Each year let them know if they are or are not getting raises. Either way, stay in touch with cost of living adjustments.

I have been working at IBM full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

I get to work with cutting edge technology on a daily basis. I get to be creative and agile to determine new use cases for artificial intelligence in the real world. Sometimes this is with clients and sometimes this is with internal IBM teams collaborating in order to create the next best use for cognitive.

    Cons

Watson can be applied to various industries in many different ways. Goals and metrics are constantly changing so you have to be flexible and motivated to learn new skills to keep up with the fast paced market.

    Advice to Management

IBM is a huge company. It can be very political and very hard to get noticed and get promoted. There are many opportunities to move up in the company, just ensure that you have attainable goals decided on with your manager in order to push towards a promotion.
