I worked at IBM as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Friendly, smart, and helpful researchers. Lots of cool research going on in many different areas. Lovely building, great location in sunny Almaden. At the top of a hill, which makes for a good view. There are often interesting research presentations to attend.

    Cons

Cafeteria food is good, but can be a bit repetitive. Have to take the shuttle up a hill, and if you miss the morning shuttle you may have to walk all the way up. Senior researchers can be very laid-back, so you might have to take some initiative in trying out your wild ideas.

    Advice to Management

I was compensated by my school, so I can't speak to normal intern compensation except to assume there is none, which is a shame. IBM corporate, please keep Almaden running--it's a wonderful research environment.

I have been working at IBM as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

The people at IBM are very helpful and knowledgeable. They are very hardworking and really hep you to achieve the results and assign a proper task to an intern. So there is a lot to learn. No politics, very peaceful environment.

    Cons

No cool environment like start-ups or other giants in bay area.

I have been working at IBM as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

I think I've gotten better career guidance from my short internship here at IBM than I have at my university; with a really good mentor-to-intern ratio, I get a lot of useful feedback and individualized support that I haven't gotten elsewhere. There is also an incredible effort to make sure that visiting interns have fun while they are here, both in and out of the office. Like pure academia, IBM Research gives me the freedom to explore, create, and discover, and there is very strong support – even from management – for making sure that I get papers published.

At the same time, I feel like less of my efforts are going to waste. Instead of just writing research code that is discarded as soon as a paper is published (there are no incentives in pure academia for maintaining a quality software system), at IBM my code has the potential to become part of a real system that people will actually use.

    Cons

I'm honestly struggling to think of downsides to interning at IBM Research. I guess the cost of living in the area of my current lab is pretty high – but obviously that's not IBM's fault, and the amount that IBM pays interns more than compensates for it. I would love to see IBM Research expand in more areas!

    Advice to Management

I think the only feedback I can give is just to keep it up! Whatever you are doing is working!

    Pros

Learning a lot. get to interact in an office environment. seeing what its like to work in the field i am studying. gaining real world experience. and most importantly having fun.

    Cons

9-5 can be exhausting at the beginning and takes some time to get used to. there is a lot of passwords to keep track of.

    Advice to Management

have the interns write down all of their passwords at first then they can destroy the paper later.

I have been working at IBM as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

I love the people and the innovative culture. I appreciate the guidance from my managers. I feel fulfilled in my work.

    Cons

I do not like only being an intern. It is a good program but it is hard to feel so new in such a big organization.

    Advice to Management

I think a longer internship than 2 months might be helpful with greater emphasis on in person teamwork.

    Pros

I get to work from home, and yet still have amazing support from my team. When in the office there are programs for continued education, networking, and post graduation job placement. Its clear that IBM wants you to succeed, and they want to take care of you.

    Cons

There are none that I have experienced.
