I have been working at IBM full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Working from home. Interact with a vast variety of teams all over the world. The management for the team I work for are awesome! They do a great job allowing me to balance my work load and my home life.

    Cons

The higher level management seem to look at employees as a number not as people. I know it is a companies goal to do well financially but IBM seems focus all their energy on that and very little on the employees that work very hard to help them gain that wealth.

I have been working at IBM full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

When it is a good fit, it's a great fit.

    Cons

Bureaucratic. Struggling to implement Agile is an understatement. The Old guard is not embracing new processes quickly enough.

    Advice to Management

Acquiring talent, using it up, and discarding it is not what you do with people. Stop leveraging the cell phone market as your overall business strategy for human resources.

I have been working at IBM full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

IBM is a sea of opportunities. Great work life balance.

    Cons

All opportunities are with managers & it would be real tough to go through the barriers.
Too much of politics & holdings.

I have been working at IBM as a contractor (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Work from home 100%, little to no travel, good pay, good people

    Cons

IBM makes their quarterly targets by cutting resources, making the job very insecure and causing unnecessary issues in project rework/restart

I worked at IBM full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The positive about the size is that there are resources for just about anything, and there are compatible groups with which to align.

    Cons

The downside of the size is that there is constant change in management, which sometimes contributes to needing to move on to continue to grow.

    Advice to Management

Integrate the value of long-term focus into the measurement system; train managers to support IDPs better (more consistently, more frequently than annually), and stop "weathering" recessions and lead the world in generating a 21st century economy that benefits all.

I worked at IBM as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

None that I can think of.

    Cons

IBM's descent into mediocrity continues. I was hired as a sub-contractor for an engagement as a PM. IBM asked me for a one-year commitment which I provided, and I turned down other opportunities to take on the work. Two months later, IBM announces a "restructuring" in which they got rid of third-party contractors. They refused to release me from my non-compete clause but offered to send in an IBM employee from India to fill the role. The client was livid - this occurred in the middle of a system cut-over. Do not trust this company - they have an attitude that IBM is a leading company, but this is far from the truth.

    Advice to Management

    None. Good riddance.
