I worked at IBM full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Lots of growth career opportunity and experience; smart, talented diverse workforce that enjoys working collaboratively. Flexible work environments and hours.

    Cons

lots of management focused on business success and with little to no focus on employee success.

    Advice to Management

When an employee works 50+ hours a week for 25 years always exceeding expectation and you eliminate their position due to changing business direction, have the decency to celebrate their contributions, say "thank you" and wish them the best of luck.

Thanks for your comment. I agree that working from home can feel isolating...that's why as we create and open up new agile workspaces, it will be a great opportunity to bring people in to collaborate... More

    Neutral Outlook
    Disapproves of CEO

I worked at IBM full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Large company with big brand-name recognition. Stability in focus areas.

    Cons

Total lack of transparency in direction from the top down, with the perception that there is no real direction. Constant layoffs ("Resource Actions") to drive shareholder value.

The focus is on stock price, with customer and employee satisfaction a distant second.

    Advice to Management

You have a difficult job to transform such a large organization. Bring your employees into the discussion -- Be transparent, be honest, stop treating them as adversaries.

    No opinion of CEO

I have been working at IBM full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Ability to gain amazing experience and work in a variety of rolls. The people within the company are also exceptional to work for and with. They are always willing to share their experience and insight to help you improve in your job.

    Cons

Losing experienced workforce due to layoffs.

    Advice to Management

What is the cost when you lose experienced workers? Usually companies tend to repeat their previous mistakes because no one with a history within the company is around to advise them. Also how long does it take to get some fully immersed into your company enough to be an asset?

    Cons

    - hiring freeze almost always, if smb leaves, no replacement is approved
    - too much bureaucracy
    - no rest area in offices, only grey colors around
