I have been working at IBM full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Company is trying to change to the moving market for more cloud computing and As a Service delivery model. IBM is trying to hire new people from outside with fresh ideas and new skills.

    Cons

Senior leadership of the company does not appear to be connected to how their directions are being interpreted on the ground. There is a gap between what the company is putting out on press and what's really happening in the company. There are too many layers in the executive ranks, and it is contributing to poor execution of sales in key brands such as Watson and Cloud.

There is still some positive aspects of the culture left, although not nearly as positive as recent as 5-6 years ago because of short term focus by the lower to mid management. Due to ongoing decline of revenue, the management culture has evolved into making decisions to make the short term numbers over doing the right thing long term. This is sacrificing many client relationships & has damaged IBM's reputation. The most recent reorganization to align by industry was a huge disruption of business and client relationships because IBM moved most of the sales assignments which meant loss of continuity and client relationships.

    Advice to Management

Rather than make wholesale changes to the sale personnel on the ground, reduce the layers of executives in the brands and get the senior executives more connected with the clients - listen to the clients and take action to win in the market

Very stable lineage, very bright future outlook.

    Cons

Sometime difficult to navigate the "process". Once you either get the "process" , or, make friends with someone that does get it, you're golden.

    I worked at IBM full-time

    Pros

    Able to work from home.

    Cons

Management is unengaged, and invests very little in employee development. Leadership is non-existent and out of touch with employees. Never met the last 5 managers I had face to face, and most recent manager made zero effort to schedule team meetings or individual checkpoints for more than 1 year. Existing employees are not paid competitively, nor are they promoted internally.

    Advice to Management

Require management to have regular contact with employees to maintain relationships and exhibit leadership. Evaluate employees who are put in management roles, and remove them from leadership roles if they are unable to perform their duties.

    Slow to change

    I worked at IBM full-time

    Pros

Average pay and benefits, strong brand history and reputation, very broad portfolio of products and services to sell

    Cons

Dysfunctional management and rapidly shifting priorities of what to sell - and every product and service has a huge staff dedicated to telling the field force to sell their product - often at the expense of other products or client desires. Very confusing to have so many in middle management who rarely ever touch a real client

    Advice to Management

Cut the middle, reduce the product line, listen to the field instead of pushing non-starter products to the wrong client set
