I worked at IBM full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

If you have a love for technology, there's a lot going on at IBM at all times. Easy to build relationships with cross-functional team members. And the breadth of knowledge one can gain is limitless. Lots of opportunity to learn from customer engagements, stay on top of industries, good insight from research organizations like Garter, IBV, IDC, Forrester.

    Cons

Some of the pros can turn into a con as well. Quest for knowledge can sometimes be overwhelming and take away focus on what you want to achieve in your career.

    Advice to Management

Keep talent and help them grow

    Pros

International Business Machines (IBM) corporation offers many technically challenging opportunities in various technical areas of business. The corporation attempts to stay competitive in the Information Technology arena and attempts to maintain a strong presence in the marketplace.

    Cons

International Business Machines (IBM) corporation has recently, over the last ten years, viewed the human resources pool as disposable solution to solve other potentially more critical underlying issues overall.

    Advice to Management

International Business Machines (IBM) corporation should reexamine the recent actions taken to resolve the underlying issues and reevaluate what has been the true reason/cause for the corporation to continually lose market share and value.

    Pros

The company has some of the brightest people in the industry IF YOU LOOK IN THE RIGHT PLACES. There is work going on in pretty much any area relevant to the IT industry.

    Cons

At the company level, there is still a lack of focus. It takes too long (in today's rapid reaction climate) to see change happen. The Innovators Dilemma is in full force as the company's existing needs trump the need for re-invention.

    Advice to Management

Cull projects mercilessly. Maniacally focus on whats important. The focus is clear at the CEO level but gets diluted through middle management. At the rank-and-file level, fundamentally contrarian projects co-exist because they are "essential" and are "still bringing money".
