I have been working at IBM full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Less politics. Code code code.
    - Build and develop everything from scratch.
    - Real impact in healthcare (industry leader in GxP cloud).
    - Decent new stacks especially in Big Data area.
    - Robust & well-built automation platform.
    - Microservice design.
    - Agile & small team.
    - Slack, latest macbook series, brand new building, open office.
    - Stellar engineers.
    - Many top engineers join Watson Health from other IBM division. This tells a lot.
    - Relatively young and new fast-paced environment.
    - The project many times mentioned by Ginni in tech talks.
    - You feel important and have a rewarding contribution.

Feels like a growing startup inside tech giant.
Does not feel like traditional IBM.
    We hate traditional IBM.
    We moved on.
    Join Watson Health.

    Cons

    - No free food.
    - Pay is flat standard in Cambridge - behind G, FB, APPL, AMZ by far.
    - Still seeing old-timers IBM zombies with thinkpad and sametime messenger roaming around every once in a while. Frusrating.
    - The way we conduct all-hands meeting, review, training, paperworks, at many times are still very old-school despite new engineering tools invested.

Again, the biggest downside is the IBM general outlook.
We suffer a lot from this.

    Advice to Management

Continue to improve the culture, invest more on people.

I worked at IBM full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    * I worked with some fantastic people
    * Some of the products and services really were "best in class"
    * There was a clear path to promotion while remaining in an engineering role rather than being forced to transition to management
    * I was pleasantly surprised several times with raises and bonuses. It's literally the only place I've ever worked where I received a raise without asking for it, and it happened to me twice in 3 years at IBM.
    * IBM's marketing and name recognition is awesome

    Cons

    * Some of the products were not "best in class"
    * Bureaucracy and politics got in the way of quality and cost us good people
    * A strategy shouldn't drastically change every year or two
    * IBM's complete flip-flop on remote workers was the primary reason I left
    * I had 6 managers in 3 years

    Advice to Management

Settle down! Stop re-organizing everyone and re-branding everything and put more focus on product quality and taking care of the people you have.

I have been working at IBM full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Always receive paycheck on time, pretty good benefits be aware of the gotchas...

    Cons

Benefits are not as good as they used to be and are nothing special compared to the rest of the industry. Your quality of life and bonus or raises depend heavily on your department and things which are largely out of your control. If your department is not successful, you will receive a small bonus if any. No 401k contributions for the first year. Tend to lay off experienced employees and replace with offshore or recent college graduates with little to no time to train the replacements. It is very hard to get management approval to get the things you need to do your job, especially hardware. Very little investment in growth or furthering education of employees. You will not be sent to conferences. Require 40 hours of education a year but how you do it is entirely your responsibility. Need to fight for raises, often no cost of living or inflation wage, meaning your salary technically gets lower every year. Feels like job is to make your managers look good without putting in work other than marking a spreadsheet. Layoffs leave whoever is left overworked and scrambling to pick up the slack. My advice for prospective employees is to make sure that the position is in sync with the strategic imperatives. Otherwise, you will have a bad time.

    Advice to Management

Don't cut departments to the bone and string customers along enough to keep the revenue coming in. You are not fooling anyone. Stop incentivizing minimizing costs when it causes products to ship late and with bugs because developers cannot do their jobs. Be aware of the intangible costs and lost revenue incurred later by refusing to spend money now.

I have been working at IBM full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Decent pay and benefits. Good remote work policy.

    Cons

LOTs of bureaucracy. The company is turning into EMC...lots of hacks and disjointed groups. IBM is struggling has been laying off 3 times a year, for the past 6 years. Leaders are very focused on their own gain and are not focused on the customer. For some reason, they are not replacing executive leaders like Microsoft and Google have. Their products don't work well, and there are layers and layers and layers of management and policies and blah. Moral is low and people fearing for their jobs. Lastly, IBM hands out jobs to relatives/friends of former executives. There are young people in management roles that have no business there. This company has not yet turned around. The consolidate divisions and say the new unit is profitable. Silly finance tricks like that.

    Pros

    Great teammates
    Some flexibility
Experience relevant to the outside job market. Great for resume and future contacts

    Manager turnover
    Hit and miss management competency
    Let go without explanation

Individuality not really distinguishable. Hard to be distinguishable.

I have been working at IBM full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The people I work with is the part I like most about my job. Everyone is supportive and helpful in any way possible. They are investing more into bringing in new hires which is great to see.

    Cons

Hours can be tough especially when project spans multiple locations in different time zones and condensed schedules. They took away the benefit of working from home regardless of your team locations.
