I worked at IBM for more than 20 years

    Pros

The work was challenging and had good people to work with. Opportunity to learn on the job and some training was available.

    Cons

IBM is downsizing in a major way in the Global Business area.

    Advice to Management

Find a way to make Global Business profitable rather than just the normal easy way out to have massive layoffs.

I have been working at IBM full-time for more than 6 years

    Pros

Introduced to wide variety of technologies. A few opportunities to take classes. Wide variety of "self serve" training opportunities. The people are generally nice to work with and for.

    Cons

Not competitive with compensation. Constantly losing the top performers while holding onto non contributors. In turn very high employee turnover rate.

    Advice to Management

Need more competitive wages to retain the talent level. Too much turnover and entry level talent.

I worked at IBM full-time for more than 4 years

    Pros

    - The work from home options at the site were very good. We were only required to be in office a few days per week, with the ability to flex that as low as two days per week. - The managers were very understanding of how rough it was to work at IBM and didn't try and compound those issues.

    Cons

    - The instability was ridiculous. It seemed like every few months you'd hear about the next big wave of layoffs that were about to happen. Morale in the office dipped, and as each layoff passed the office became emptier and emptier until maybe 10% of desks per each floor were filled. - They hired mostly non-technical people to perform technical jobs. When I had to teach a coworker who has been there for 3 years what...

    Advice to Management

First line managers, you're powerless so no advice here. Second line managers, quit making a once great company the main laughing stock of the IT world.

I have been working at IBM full-time for more than 20 years

    Pros

Work From Home 4 weeks vacation after 10 years

    Cons

Work From Home 24 x 7 on call continuously no second/third shift coverage Expected to learn not only IBM hardware, but all vendors (EMC, Hitachi, HP, etc etc). Not one single minute of training allowed. Learn on the fly. Pretend to customers that you are knowledgeable. Lie. Stress. Not one single manager technical. Really amazing what questions they ask. Where are all the worker bee's ?

    Advice to Management

Fire all but one layer. Why are there 7 layers of management when trying to communicate to customer ? Don't you see that what you sell we can't support if we've never been trained ? Some devices we've never even heard of much less know how to implement. Please get more on board with what your employee's support.

I have been working at IBM full-time for more than 4 years

        Pros

When you work at IBM, expect to start on Varsity. You work on large accounts and see risks you wouldn't normally see anywhere else, especially if you are relatively inexperienced. There is a lot of opportunity of you are willing to toe the company line.

        Cons

        No such kind of things...
