I have been working at IBM as a contractor (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    Engaging work projects, good people

    Cons

IBM manages contractors as an elastic resource, so be prepared for furloughs and layoffs. What is promised to you on intake subject to change, dramatically over your tenure. Be prepared to hurry up and wait, as it takes a while for the flywheel to start turning.

    Advice to Management

Treat contractors like people, not objects. We're the reason that you are able to retain your holiday bonuses. Also, give credit where credit is due. On the last "All Hands Call", one of the most clueless project managers on staff was held up as a great example of "Customer Communication" and "Driving Innovation in Process", when in reality it was ME and the team of off-shore contractors that I was wrangling and driving. I was the person who created the accountability, managed the project and basically used the Project Manager as a resource to block us from useless meetings (which there are many) and focus on getting the work done. Pissed me off that he got the credit, and I got released to go find another job.

    Negative Outlook
    Disapproves of CEO

I worked at IBM full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Starting salaries; global network; brand recognition.

    Cons

Upper management is managing the company for personal profit. Age discrimination is rife. Women are discriminated against in STEM occupations in business units (but perhaps not in IBM Research). Inconsistency in allowing remote work. Miserable working conditions in company facilities: dirty, hot or cold, outdated equipment, cheap furnishings, expensive and poor quality water/coffee/food.

    Advice to Management

Manage for the long-term. Stop firing US engineers and off-shoring their IP.
