I worked at IBM as a contractor (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Opportunity to support IBM foreign customers

    Advice to Management

Ability to adapt to downrated environments and having excellent contacts in US to provide Technical systems support as needed

I worked at IBM full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Was able to work remotely. Worked a total of 25 years at IBM. The benefits were good and the people were great.

    Cons

The working environment changed over the years with constant lay offs and jobs being taken off shore to Brazil, India, Philippine, and Costa Rica. It was very stressful wondering if you would be on the new list for lay offs. IBM let go of a lot of great dedicated employees.

I worked at IBM full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Flexible good work life balance. Good work environment and lots of opportunity to learn new skills and to work on new projects.

    Cons

Travel if you work in GBS could be a problem. Otherwise software group is a good place to.work on the whole.

    Advice to Management

Stock has tanked. CEO bonus sky high.

I worked at IBM full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Competitive salary, flexibility, good work-life balance. If you have a good Manager (I did), you have a lot of autonomy.

    Cons

Benefits while very good are also very pricy. You’d expect much lower premiums than you actually pay.

If you work from home, there’s a reason it’s called “I’m By Myself”. Desktop support is a last resort when you have an issue. And you literally have a serial number.

They fill your head with “so many opportunities!”, but the reality is that it’s just as difficult to move around in IBM as it is to get your foot in the door - you have to know someone.

    Advice to Management

Do away with the review process. It’s antiquated and damaging.

I worked at IBM full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    1) IBM is a (the?) top, global brand in the IT products and services space
    2) IBM Watson has been a huge differentiator in the past 2-3 years
    3) IBMers are highly competent individuals who are full of integrity

    Cons

Financial performance over the last five years has not met Wall Street's expectations. Resource actions have been necessary to align headcount with declining revenues. Employee morale has declined accordingly

    Advice to Management

    1) Data IS the new natural resource. As such, IBM should acquire more data assets to compliment their data-processing assets. Look to the integrated oil industry as a model
    2) IBM should look to re-enter the B2C space (e.g. Microsoft acquires Xbox) in order to remain sharp and relevant in the hearts and minds of the average consumer (who might also buy IT products & services)
    3) Find a way to win at Cloud

I have been working at IBM full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Exposure to many unique technologies and the opportunity to work with teams on a global basis.

    Cons

Co-location initiative that is disrupting IBM employees families, erosion of benefits, a 401K match that only occurs at the end of the year.

    Advice to Management

Make changes at the exec level for a change and stop the talent drain

I worked at IBM full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Access to scanning electron microscopes; working with engineers; nature of job description; fellow employees; benefits.

    Cons

Management: some good / some terribly bad managers; biased; smiling faces tell lies

    Advice to Management

Take courses on human behavior. People are not cattle, treat them with respect, kindness, and intellect. You'll be surprised by the results.

I have been working at IBM full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

IBM is huge with 10K's of products, 340K employees, and unlimited potential. When you figure out how to work with and use IBM's size, you can delight your clients, make a good living, work with people who become your friends, and on rare occasions get an amazing reward like going to Hawaii with friend for Best of IBM (only 1K go).

    Cons

IBM is huge with 10K's of products, 340K employees, and unlimited ways to get lost or feel unwanted, plus some areas just don't succeed. It takes brains, heart, guts and a little bit of luck, but that is true anywhere.

    Advice to Management

Continue to clarify what is staying the same and what is changing. Even if I'm last person off the ship, I'll do it if I know it is for a good cause. If you are not clear, I just think I got forgotten.
