I have been working at IBM full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

IBM seems to have a good strategy of cloud and cognitive. IBM is trying to turn the ship and re-invent itself. The people are always what makes IBM special.

    Cons

Company has been financially engineered for over a decade without real invention and almost missed the cloud wave. IBM cares more about its senior executives than middle management and sellers which they are losing. IBM has lost its hardware and software business but still has a vibrant service business.

    Advice to Management

Change out the old IBM senior leadership and clear the way for the new IBM leadership and middle management to run the company.

    Positive Outlook

I have been working at IBM full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Loads of opportunities for career growth and exposure to many different industries. Progressive new parental leave benefit that is far superior to any I've experience in my 30+ year career. IBM supports innovation and change in order to deliver relevant products and services to customers, which in turn affords many opportunities for growth and learning for employees.

    Cons

As with any large corporation sometimes change can be slow especially when it involved cross-departmental change.

I have been working at IBM full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

IBM is constantly reviewing and updating our benefits. Just this week, a new parental benefit was announced, now: new mothers can now take up to 20 weeks leave, up from 14 weeks; and the IBM dads, partners, and adoptive parents to 12 weeks. Plus, IBM will reimburse as much as $20,000 for eligible adoption or surrogacy expenses. This is a great way to attract and retain employees, because it is clear that IBM... thinks and supports the IBMers in the most important moments of our lives.

    Cons

Need more advertisement internally and externally

    Advice to Management

Leverage all the good benefits when recruiting and hiring; as well as during your coaching and feedback sessions. These topics are really worthy to discuss and to ensure that are used by all the new and future parents in IBM.

I have been working at IBM full-time for less than a year

    Pros

If working for a great manager in a growth or supported area, it can be the best learning, experience, exposure compared to majority of comparable positions in other companies.

    Cons

If not in a growth or supported area, you can be let go with no severance after decades of top performance.

    Advice to Management

Treat employees more fairly. Promote fair and deserving contributors. Put some effort and resources into employees. The new policy of 1 month severance no matter the tenure at the firm speaks volumes of how you treat employees.

I have been working at IBM full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Strong humanist values for a large corporate entity. No ceiling on ability to impact or effect change at any level. Great patent culture. Diverse teams/global collaboration. Vast library of development and learning programs/certifications.

    Cons

Largeness (300k+) means it's really like working at a company made of many smaller companies - so your experience can vary a lot depending on where you are. Like everywhere else- your experience is hugely influenced by the style and skill of your manager. Also like everywhere else, there are a mix of of skilled and unskilled managers.

    Advice to Management

Invest even more in first line managers. I don't think they're *neglected* really; but IBM could do so much more to train and grow managers, and to retain and reward strong managers.
