I worked at IBM full-time for more than 9 years

      Pros

Telecommuting was allowed by the firm for better work life balance. Improved job stability if head kept down and your performance was average or better. People generally nice.

      Cons

Long hours. Difficult to advance if not highly favored by boss. Political skills important and often valued over technical expertise.

      Advice to Management

Push back on unreasonable requests that consume employee's finite resources.

I have been working at IBM full-time for more than 6 years

      Pros

Relax environment and overall good management. Opportunity to learn from multiple roles. Interaction with senior executives is very common so you can learn from them as well.

      Cons

Salaries are not very high, and opportunities to grow (unless you are in head quarters or reporting directly to them) are not very clear.

      I worked at IBM full-time

      Pros

Plenty of opportunities if you are willing to put in the time and work. Also, Big Blue is truly a global workforce where you interact with people around the world.

      Cons

Executives think they are smarter dthan their analysts and developers. There are too many initiative's and subgroups within each brand. Corporate is never willing to bend.

      Advice to Management

Stay consistent. The 5 year plan's worked well. Even if you do not hit every benchmark it is still necessary to put clear goals out to your employees.

I worked at IBM for more than 20 years

      Pros

Some flexibility with normal work hours. Could come in up to 2 hours before or after 'normal' work hours and leave later or earlier, as appropriate. Sometimes could work from home as each person gets their own laptop. Can change jobs within the company after 2-3 years, if you want to learn different areas.

      Cons

My experience with 99.9% of managers was that if you got the job done, and someone else didn't, they wouldn't spend the time and work with the slacker to get him/her to do his/her job. They would just add it to you to do it. You can complain, but they don't care, because they know you'll get the work done, or you have failed to be a 'team player' - they LOVE that buzz word! But why would it take 3 people to replace you...

      Advice to Management

MANAGE your people instead of taking the easy way out, or at least recognize and reward your workers.
