I have been working at ICON full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great Team and wonderful support. Everyone pulls their weight.

    Cons

Some systems or antiquated or inefficient. Sometimes people don't seem to know what the project requires.

    Advice to Management

Be more knowledgeable about changes before passing them on clinical teams. The abrupt change in processes is disconcerting.

I have been working at ICON full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Over the years I have had many opportunities to grow professionally and the people I've worked with have all been wonderful.

    Cons

Work/life balance has began to suffer due to (I believe) poor decisions by senior/executive management. I also believe the pay could be much better.

    Advice to Management

Hire more staff in the US and EU regions and/or train the newly hired staff in Chennai to the point they can handle the work that was left when a large amount of the US and EU staff were fired which was then dumped in the remaining staff in those regions as the Chennai staff weren't capable to pick up that load. Also consider paying some of us better (I know everyone wants more money, but I truly believe many of us deserve more).

I worked at ICON full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

There are some great people in Clin Ops and Data Management. I never thought I would leave.

    Cons

All the great teams in the world cannot make up for hiring shortages, which force staff to cover much more than the 'official' 1.0 FTE . Experienced CRAs get placed on too many protocols with competing deadlines, sites are switched frequently and burn - out is a given.

    Advice to Management

Don't keep letting BD promise the moon for a contract and then dump the study on a seriously understaffed clinical team. It makes everyone frustrated, exhausted and eventually apathetic. All the emphasis on metrics only benefits CRAs on the simple studies and penalizes those on complex studies that don't enroll as quickly. Make substantive changes instead of pointless feel-good programs to 'reward' us for putting up with not having a home life.

    Pros

Great way to get your foot in the door of pharma

    Cons

No opportunity to grow at all. Promised opportunities, strung along for years. I also felt like the environment felt clique-ish.

    Advice to Management

Upper management in the Chicago office: invest in your employees!!

I have been working at ICON full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great people and good flexibility. ICON is an ideal place to learn the industry. Leading the way in risk based monitoring and implementing very cool technologies.

    Cons

Management is out of touch with employees, metrics-driven approach (quantity) can stifle quality, more empasis must be put into indication specific training. ICON needs to realize that there are several CROs that are competing for the most talented CRAs. ICON must realize that the pay and the lack of commitment to develop more specialized employees has caused many to move to other places.

    Advice to Management

Train us, retain us, and trust us to work more closely with Sponsors instead of putting two levels of management between us and the client.

I have been working at ICON full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Excellent trainings to familiarize staff with GCP and clinical trial regulations; Managers consciously aware of employees who want to move into another role; use of SMART objectives for goals/evaluations; ability to move around in different clinical trial specialties

    Cons

havent been here long enough to know many; pay scale for moving up into a different role not great; turnover seems to be an issue especially when working on multi-year studies

Current Employee - Senior Clinical Project Manager in Chicago, IL

    Pros

    Strong Work/life balance
    Friendly and approachable colleagues
    Generous vacation and time-off schedule
    Above average benefits
International footprint allows for collaboration globally

    Cons

Over-emphasis on shareholder opinion, which translates to a focus on short-term tactics rather than long-term strategies to improve the company's business
Significant growing pains in an organization that has grown faster than its infrastructure
Below average pay makes it difficult to attract top talents
Lean travel policy and reimbursement process gives sponsors the impression of a company that competes on cost rather than on talent

    Advice to Management

Spare no expense at hiring top talents who can serve as a role model for others. Focus on staff training and development to better demonstrate how we are a "Symbol of Excellence." Truly reward top performers to continue to motivate them as well as encourage others.
