    I worked at IDEO full-time

    Pros

Really great humans. You will walk away with friendships that will carry on beyond your time at IDEO. Depending on what part of IDEO you work in, you can feel a deep sense of family & community. Certain parts of IDEO do lack a connective feel though, so it's important to know the culture of the studio you're joining. Interesting projects. You will stretch your skills as a designer and build creative leadership....

    Cons

Highly disorganized and disconnected. None of the different studios are integrated in a meaningful way. Each location has completely different cultures that are very dependent on the leadership & most connected/popular people in that location. Feels extremely corporate, and growing in this feeling every day. In my years at IDEO, I've seen a steady decline of the creative, playful culture that the firm was built...

I worked at IDEO full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The designers are absolutely brilliant. The work is interesting and more meaningful than you are likely to find anywhere else. Benefits are generous. Work life balance is unprecedented. The exposure and opportunity to travel is exciting and enriching. If you’re selected as a favorite, your ideas are welcomed, respected, celebrated, and given a fair amount of autonomy.

    Cons

If you are not selected as a favorite, you will struggle. You will never be sufficient. You will never be valued or appreciated. You will not be supported. You will be gaslighted, scapegoated, and/or blamed when things are challenging. You will invest your entire self in this work, and it will never be acknowledged. I have never, ever, felt so judged as a human being at any other job. The culture is largely driven...

I have been working at IDEO full-time for more than a year

    Pros

IDEO is a wildly creative and optimistic company with a fun, supportive, and open-minded culture. People are incredibly talented and passionate about what they do. You'll always be learning about new projects your colleagues are (somehow!) finding the time to take on—fashion design, non-profit work, Burning Man installations, and so on. Work/life balance is unbeatable. Nearly unlimited vacation days, lots of flexibility,...

    Cons

It's no secret that many people take a little pay-cut to work at IDEO, and we won't be able to beat the crazy amenities offered at neighboring SV tech companies (endless supply of free food, on-site gym, etc.) IDEO can also be a little political. "Radical candor" is one of IDEO's values, but people don't always say what they mean. (You hear lots of things like, "perhaps we could..." "this might be..." "I wonder if..."...

I have been working at IDEO

    Pros

If you are vocal and upfront about what you care about (and I am), then you can actually land yourself on some pretty neat projects. If you work hard and deliver something awesome, you can often get your work to market (at least that's what I've found–every project of mine, except one has gone to market). If you set boundaries (which I do) you can partake in the generous vacation policy they have and actually manage to...

    Cons

For introverts, not being heard or recognized for their awesome efforts. But MOST ANNOYING,I see the margins we charge our clients and I see what my salary is and it just feels wrong. Having worked at 3 design consulting firms, we have the highest margins by a landslide, yet our salaries are the same is not lower. That is really frustrating, especially living in the Bay Area.

    Advice to Management

Please pay us more. We aren't asking for much, just enough to live in a city where a 1 bedroom will easily cost you $4-5k a month. Also, fire about 1/3 of your partners that sit at the top, don't pull their weight and make 3-4x as much as I do.

I worked at IDEO full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Amazing culture, amazingly talented people, interesting work (most of the time), work life balance, unlimited vacation days.

    Cons

Salary too low, close to impossible to engage with smaller clients firms due to cost structure (project margin require)

    Advice to Management

Raise salaries, be flexible on project structure.

I worked at IDEO full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Wonderful and inspiring coworkers. It's rare to find a company where literally every single person you meet is respectful, intellectually curious, and optimistic - it's a fantastic environment. The non-hierarchical nature has his advantages. Everyone is encouraged and supported both on the micro project level and as you think of long term career growth. Work life balance is a very real thing.

    Cons

The one downside is that it can be somewhat tough in the early days to get a feel for the informal company structure. E.g. if you have time between projects, you might find yourself wondering "what should do i for the next couple of days before the next project starts?" without much proactive communication in this regard. There are many advantages to having a less rigid hierarchy, but one disadvantage is that the lack...

    Advice to Management

Keep the spirit of the company as is. It's truly an amazing place to work. Perhaps put some time into thinking about each employees first 12 months outside of the standard (and helpful) employee reviews to help folks more rapidly acclimate.

    I worked at IDEO

    Pros

-Challenging projects and interesting work -Diversity of work is great -Passionate team members -Flexible work environment -Supportive of work/life balance

    Cons

-There is very little accountability therefore dead weight gets kept on review after review -Adverse to spending money on tools that would allow teams to be more successful and efficient -It is very political and management is, often time, adverse to hearing truths or standing up for people (very little advocacy or mentorship though it is something that is touted in the organization). -Non-design staff is not valued...

    Advice to Management

-Senior management should work harder at managing its existing talent and retain quality people: integrate more mentorship, higher salaries, transparency about how to grow or what is needed to advance. -It would also be great to see some cross-training happening so people are more agile and can eventually grow into other roles. -It is paramount for IDEO to invest in better tools outside of IT needs. The quality of...

I have been working at IDEO

    Pros

    - Some great people are what make it worthwhile. Of course, there are a number of not so amazing folks too, but overall I feel lucky to have many friends and interesting colleagues to work with. - Many projects are interesting, the trick is actually getting to work on them. - Good work-life balance. - Lots of autonomy in doing your work, no one looking over your shoulder.

    Cons

    - People and career management is pretty bad. Total lack of objective performance evaluation criteria. It's nepotism and about how loud you can brag about yourself. - Because of the above, underwhelming people stay and it is beginning to show in the work. - The feedback system is one sided and not transparent. - Not a place to make a career. Many people stay for a few years to get the experience and the resume building,...

    Advice to Management

    - Adopt objective performance criteria - Instate 360 feedback or something like it. - Pay competitive salaries to keep the best people.
