I worked at IDEXX Laboratories full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great facility (if you work in the Synergy building). Great health facility (gym, onsite nurse practitioner, health classes). Business looks rock solid to investors, new hires and people driving by the Westbrook HQ. There is tremendous potential. 401k and health benefits are above average. Stock purchase program is a winner. The biggest Pro to working at IDEXX HQ in Maine is to be able to say you work at IDEXX. There is limited opportunity in Maine to work for a business like IDEXX and You are subliminally reminded of this daily with perks. Pros: on surface

CEO (Jon) is a great guy, although disconnected from the IDEXX reality. His people shield him from the truths and never want him to find out how the sausage is being made. He wants to play a hands-on role but is not allowed to.

    Cons

Summary: Playground for inexperienced millennials (warm bodies to fill seats and reduce labor costs). Female to male ratio (in marketing) is around 10-1 (woman rich environment).

HR: Very confusing structure from the start. Orientation meeting is the first and last time you will work with HR. Day one you are on your own to figure it out. This isn't a test to see if you are capable... nobody is driving the bus there. HR is an empty suit. They believe in "self serve HR model". HR ignores real problems and avoids "dust up" issues. If you raise a concern, they call it "noise". If you aren't a millennial or act like one, you will quickly see this is not your typical grown-up HR staff and this organization is not for you. If you're a current employee and approaching 40, leave now (especially if you're a man).

Management (Marketing channel): Mid-level and senior management is made up of mostly women (90% +). There is a tight-knit sorority feel to the group. Managers with zero people management skills are empowered to lead small groups/teams with limited guidance to make them feel significant. There is an overwhelming sense of self importance and limited team collaboration and spirit. The managers ensure their "friends" are promoted and protected. If you're not in the "circle" you are in for a tough ride. There is lots of talk and planning but limited action. You are told you are encouraged to have an entrepreneurial spirit - but nobody wants to hear your story. Annual reviews are merely paperwork. People who deserve promotions are passed over (if you're not in the "club") and those who have not earned advancement are placed in high esteem (if they are in the "club"). There are too many layers of middle managers, adding limited value to the organization (costing too much to retain).

Smile, laugh loudly, ingest lots of organic snacks and fair trade coffee, walk around aimlessly for hours, bash Christian values and conservative principles and you will make a perfect fit. If you're looking to create greatness, make a difference in people's lives, collaborate with other like-minded intelligent people, you may want to pass.

    Advice to Management

Limit the AMOUNT of managers you have and increase the QUALITY and ABILITY of fewer leaders.

I worked at IDEXX Laboratories full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Colleagues, Health Insurance, 401K, onsite parking

    Cons

Impossible work load to manage, expected to be available 24/7 - goals switch constantly, mid project. Dept, managers lack vision, micro manage, and basically make your life miserable. High turnover due to lack of work life balance. Several salaries for same position, good luck getting through middle management for fair equity.

    Advice to Management

Streamline management. Bring in a consulting firm to direct you on areas that need improving for a company of your size and stature.. Current management has been there too long to have the vision or experience to manage. You have some great employees that are not being valued and can only maintain the expectations and stress for so long. The message and mission of company is not reflected in middle management. Retention matters.

IT leadership is a mess. They don't have respect for what really motivates people. I've had 5 different managers in 3 years.

    Advice to Management

Learn how to lead through the hearts of people, not just with fear.

I have been working at IDEXX Laboratories full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

If you want to work at a world class organization in high tech / Life Sciences, and enjoy all the benefits of a great company and great lifestyle being in Maine, there is one company: IDEXX.

IDEXX is an entrepreneurial growth company with a deep passion for serving customers, and winning in the marketplace. Also, a great place to work if you love animals, since the companies products extend their lives and improve their health.

    Cons

The pace of change is fast, so you have to be prepared to learn quickly and go outside your comfort zone. If you're looking for a 9 to 5 job, there are those opportunities, but don't expect rapid progression.

    Advice to Management

Keep the focus on IDEXX as a growth company, don't get sucked into big company approaches and fads!

I worked at IDEXX Laboratories full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The companion animal side of their business is growing dramatically and their business model of "criterizing" human medicine highly profitable. Growth and opportunities abound.

    Cons

Many employees are in positions for which they have little or no qualification to be in, especially those from the earliest days. Politics prevail beyond all else and are counter productive to business growth.

    Advice to Management

Ask why world-class experts brought in from the outside typically leave the organization quickly.

    Pros

Competitive compensation, good work environment, committed to providing quality services and product to the veterinary industry, helpful committed staff, open communications path to the senior executives.

    Cons

Slow to invest in new opportunities, IT is not considered part of the core business model and is not an investment candidate, multi-national company that is still operates in some ways as a small startup.

    Advice to Management

Focus on investment and innovation, strive to improve reputation to enable attracting top performers.
