    Pros

Business units have independence because the company gives each business unit local authority. Business performance goals are very clear, and sometimes that does lead to quarter-to-quarter management (vs. longer term strategies). The pace of the organization is such that workers can be very committed to the job, yet also achieve good work/life balance, particularly in entry and mid-level roles. The company culture is strong and supportive. And inter-company communications identifies competitive opportunities throughout the company. Salaries and benefits are competitive.

    Cons

While business units are independent, they are closely overseen by the corporate board. Because units share board members (one unit president may sit on another's board and vice versa), there is often not enough challenge at a peer/board level. It's easy to play it safe to achieve plan, and as a result, the company may not be innovating fast enough. It can be hard to get financial support for new products and significant strategic change can be difficult.

    Advice to Management

Innovate and evolve faster. Bring in outside board members to bring fresh perspectives into the larger business units.

I worked at IDG Media full-time

    Pros

IDG allowed a data based, creative and team based approach to its new magazine editors

    Cons

Too rigid in its approach and extremely hierarchical in its structure, making for a slower pace of growth

    Advice to Management

Get a little flexible and treat content providers as journalists instead of technical writers and you will find a whole new genre of writing open up for you
