I have been working at IDOT full-time

    Pros

The people are nice and have developed that unique wit and cynicism you only find in state workers that really livens the day. Union insurance is they best you'll get out of the state, and has no out of pocket cost to you.

    Cons

You work for the state of Illinois, which is doomed to bankruptcy in a few years.. Equipment is old, the are far too few staff for the work that needs to be done, you'll be consistently underpaid compared to private industry, promotion is rigid and tied to union seniority, and the job is primed to be phased out by automation within the decade.

    Advice to Management

Vote Rauner and Madigan out of office. They're killing ALL the state agencies, not just IDOT.

    Pros

Consistent schedule, wonderful coworkers, easy job. That's the extent of the positive. If you like working at a place where friendships are important, this is the place for you.

    Cons

Little room for advancement and run by completely incompetent and bullying Management. Management is essentially what ran me out, as well as drove me crazy,. They use middle managers to bully the people at the bottom of the chain, hence covering their own butts. I joined the public sector in hopes of making a difference across the board and serving the community. You don't get anything like that here. If you're looking for a place where you can just pretty much take orders and be bullied around, this is the place for you. If not, look elsewhere! There are plenty of public-sector departments that are better than this place. What a joke it was.

    Advice to Management

Hire people that know what the hell they're doing, not because they were your friend.
