    Neutral Outlook

I worked at IITRI full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Niche market, diverse scientific expertise, lots of teachers within the tenured team, good regulatory history, free education opportunities

    Cons

This is a small, old, non-profit with established ways, policies and culture that provide for a very dysfunctional business and working environment by any current day standards. They consistently fail to meet reasonable expectations for good customer service and they consistently fail to adequately support the front line people bringing new people and business to the door. Change is so very needed in the culture internally from top down.

    Advice to Management

Wake up! This is a really cool organization with really sellable niche expertise and some really talented people.

    Negative Outlook

    I worked at IITRI full-time

    Pros

Good experience to learn new techniques during times when the company has a lot of contracted projects to work on. Tuition benefits at the school.

    Cons

Management is rarely present. Leaves management/training/scheduling to senior lab technicians. Senior lab technicians were not qualified to fulfill role of management, lacked proper skills and etiquette. When the company has a slow period, senior lab technicians, fearing for their own jobs do not help and properly train junior technicians so that if lay-offs occur, senior technician keep their own jobs.

Harassment in the workplace was ignored by HR when brought up in a complaint.

    Also poor pay.

    Advice to Management

Management needs to be actually present in the offices and labs so that they see whats going on underneath them.

    Negative Outlook

I worked at IITRI full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Tuition and health benefits are pretty solid.

    Various company outings.

    Cons

Working for IITRI was like working in the twilight zone. You really never knew what was expected of you because you were never really trained appropriately. This is mostly to do with the chaotic environment that IITRI has. Everything is pretty archaic and there is not a real solid LIMs system in place to assist the employees. IITRI really needs to train their employees properly and have management that insures their employees are well aware as to what's expected of them. No one should have to guess on whether or not what they did was right or wrong. That is why systems are in place so that people are aware of the standard.

    Advice to Management

Management has to have a universal standard that all employees are aware of. There were too many different rules for different divisions or even rules that were different inside on division. The training regiment is poor and needs to be addressed as soon as possible. Management also needs to make sure managers have social skills. My division manager lacked the proper etiquette when addressing his employees which made for some really awkward demoralizing moments.

    Pros

Friendly environment, really laid back. Benefits are good compared to other places especially, time off policy

    Cons

Really bad management. Company could be doing a lot better financially wise if it wasn't for the mismanagement. Salaries are at least 15% to 20% lower compare to the private sector. Since the company is a non-profit organization and most of the work is government contracts, there is a lot of fluctuation in the amount of work. Not a very stable company to work with.

    Advice to Management

There really is a lack of leadership and poor management at IITRI.
